Kinda had a bad day in the car....was buying a glock 21...fits perfect in the door handle pocket...and when I was in the store, someone asked who owned the red Porsche....I said I do....turns out it was a hit and run while it was parked by a white Nissan Sentra.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

20 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I have a 2000 996, has 60K on the clock. Been searching and sounds like the rubber/oil smell is normal....or is it not? Had a little bit of smoke coming from the rear vents after a fresh oil change. Running Mibil 1 0W-40 in Colorado. I have the horn issue....works when the ignition is not on, but when it is on..no function. Also, seems like the reverse lights are not working...from my research on the forum...sounds like it is a switch issue. Any insight on these? Love the car, traded in a BMW E46 Dinan S for it. No mods on the car besides Fabspeed exhaust tips it came with and have a Fabspeed intake in the garage ready to install myself. Any tips would be appreciated. Not my first Porsche, had an old 914/6 euro spec when I was in the military...Pics of the car, just hit 60K miles..

POST 2 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Also...anywhere I can get some bumperettes in guards red from a sponsor? Looked at several and did not see them. Appreciate that info also.

POST 3Original post

yup - all OK ! sounds like you have a handle on the items welcome! nice looking car....except the color bumperplugs.com

POST 4Original post

all are known issues.... rentech diy: horn reverse light.... btw, I just got mine, will post a diy if you want. as for the oil smell.... is it after a spirited drive?... thats normal. you can have your bumperettes painted by eric at bumperplugs.com... a sponsor.

POST 5Original post

At the risk of starting a range war, I would suggest that you change to 5W-40 as I believe 0W-40 is no longer recommended.

POST 6 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Burning rubber smell, strong. No oil leaks but assume they pool up on the underbody covers. At 60K I think I need a new S belt. Thanks for the sponsor link!!!! I would not say it was a hard drive, but still....more of a rubber smell and not from the tires....live in Colorado, felt the tires..cold. No signs of oil leaks. At 60K miles...should I be worried about the S belt? Any other things on a Gen 1 I forgot? Education mode on here.............Thanks all. And...I know the oil wars....in Colorado, the Porsche dealer recommends Mobil 1, 0-W40, same that I ran in my BMW.

POST 7Original post

OK... now we're gonna need pics of your car. S belts takes like 5 min to install (with beers in between maybe 7 minutes).

my bad.... Im highly medicated (everyone in the fam is sick), a little slow this early AM. Nowadays, I didnt think you can post a pic with just 3 posts.... but I have to admit, the noobs have been really good with the pic thing lately.... its great to see the 996 being bought and used. Maybe people are finally understanding this model and not afraid of it. to the OP.... do a quick search on cosmoline smell and see if that is what you are smelling... there are plenty of that info.

POST 10Original post

Welcome to Rennlist. Sounds like you are experiencing the Porsche scent that is discussed regularly. As mentioned the serp belt can be done easily and quickley by ant DIY. Become a member and you can access valuable tech info for free.

POST 12Original post

The OP does have a handle....glad he is here and Welcome! BTW.....good job everybody for on not biting on the oil question.

POST 14Original post

welcome. Good to see the Pcar working in the snow. Epic snowfall this year in Colorado.

POST 15Original post

Welcome to rennlist from another Colorado rennlister. My car smells like burning rubber 90% of the time. FWIW, I rented a 2010 Carrera S in Germany last fall, and it smelled the same way.

POST 16Original post

Welcome aboard The horn issue I believe has to do with the ignition switch malfunction? I had it on my boxster Rest I think you have being pointed out where to go to.

POST 18 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks all. Kinda had a bad day in the car....was buying a glock 21...fits perfect in the door handle pocket...and when I was in the store, someone asked who owned the red Porsche....I said I do....turns out it was a hit and run while it was parked by a white Nissan Sentra. Lucky, no dent, was on the driver side bumper. Little rubbing compound took off the white paint. I was still mad. Last week I got hit with a stray stone they lay down for snow traction, made a small crack I need to get filled on the windshield. Been a tough week. Love the car and I have no complaints. New tires and rims arrive Monday.

POST 19Original post

We need a side pic so we can check out your wheels. But the real question is are the pumpkins intact?

POST 20Original post
