Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Leading evidence: 'Install rear suspension a few months prior' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'rotor, a piston, or the e brake shoe' (1 discussions; 0 report identifying it and 1 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Install rear suspension a few months prior' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

I replaced the e-brake shoes and took it for a test ride.

I then replaced the entire brake system from the hard lines out on all four corners new stainless lines, caliper hardlines, rotors, pads, and hardware.

The e-brake shoe was worn unevenly so I replaced them and cleaned up the hardware.

The wheel was a little sticky in one spot which made me think it was the rotor, a piston, or the e brake shoe.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.
10 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

I posted in the "what did you do to your 996" thread about my overhaul of the braking and suspension components, hoping I had solved it, sadly it's still there, and need ideas as to what else could be causing it.
I don't believe it was present before I installed the rear suspension a few months prior
My car:
99 C2 with 177k miles. Flow One 18" wheels with 15mm ECS spacers. General G-Max 265/35 tires
The problem:
I have a fairly loud metallic scraping/creaking noise coming from the left wheel that increases in frequency with speed. I want to say it's not audible when the car is cold but after driving for a little bit, and using the brakes it becomes more pronounced. Unfortunately, I can't replicate the noise when the car is up on the lift. The wheel was a little sticky in one spot which made me think it was the rotor, a piston, or the e brake shoe. The e-brake shoe was worn unevenly so I replaced them and cleaned up the hardware. Road tested and the noise came back after
My attempted fixes:
Adjusting the metal splash shield thinking it was touching the rotor in one spot or there was a rock stuck in it. I didn't find any evidence.
I replaced the e-brake shoes and took it for a test ride. The noise was still present
I then replaced the entire brake system from the hard lines out on all four corners new stainless lines, caliper hardlines, rotors, pads, and hardware. I took it for a quick test drive around the block and the noise was still present. It was mild since it was a short drive but I could hear it.
I will try to capture the noise in a video and update the post.
Well, I think I know the answer now. I checked for play in the bearing and it was tight 9 and 3, but 12 and 6 had a decent amount of play that I hadn't noticed before. I guess I have to undo a bunch of stuff I just did.
I just did this job on my 986. Do you have the tool to press out the hub/bearing?
If not, I was successful with this one:

Enjoy!
Wheel bearings make strange noises. My noise was frequent and clearly at certain moderate road speeds... and
only I could hear it
.
And if I had my wife drive and I was passenger I could not hear it, neither could she. New front wheel bearings fixed it. And the Tech showed me the left - driver side - bearing was going bad, with just the slightest feel of roughness.
My 99 had the same issue. The shop took off the 340 ft-lbs nut and half shaft, could not find any issues, put it all back together, and the noise has been gone ever since.
