If that doesn't work you need to check for fuel pressure.

Dont fill the tank fully in case your fuel pump went bad.

Whilst I can't see any evidence for the fuel being bad (fuel cap smells like fuel) it did one funny thing: On setting off, it showed 1/4 tank, at the test 1/2 tank (with no pit stop in between).

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hi,
I'm sorry to say that my car has been dormant lately (I have a good excuse: I've been sorting the 964) and after some basic checks I took it for its MOT test yesterday. Aside from the surface rust on the brakes (which some enthusiastic stopping took care of), everything seemed to be behaving, right up until the point when the tester came to drive it off the ramp at the end of the test.
Engine turned over well enough but wouldn't start. After some coaxing from the boss, it still wouldn't start, so it was unceremoniously pushed off the ramp to make way for the next examinee.
Left it alone for 5 mins in case there was flooding going on (no obvious fuel smells) and it thought about starting.
Advised to disconnect the MAF sensor and it decided it would start - although with a very low idle (approx 650-700rpm).
I thought foolishly that this was my cue to head home.
Five minutes later, it lost power (wouldn't rev) and died, never to re-start.
Whilst I can't see any evidence for the fuel being bad (fuel cap smells like fuel) it did one funny thing: On setting off, it showed 1/4 tank, at the test 1/2 tank (with no pit stop in between). Could this be a s dumb as faulty fuel sender in a dry tank?
Any suggestions for troubleshooting?

Any codes?
If not, maybe some fresh gas in the tank might be what it needs. That's the simplest thing to try. If there is no gas and no fuel pressure it might take some cranking to get fuel flowing again.
If that doesn't work you need to check for fuel pressure. Fuel pump could be bad or a clogged filter. Bad fuse (although, I doubt that).
Thanks Marv, I'll give those a try.
I wonder if my electricians' tape would poke through the fuel filler into the tank to confirm that there is actually fuel there? (This is how they measure fuel on many light aircraft btw!)
I'll let you know how I get on.

Thanks Mike. Just had to drain fuel from my 964 in my small garage and it's a sobering experience - having a bucket of volatile fuel in a confined space is certainly nothing like metering out many times the amount at a petrol station.
The 996 is still sat outside the house waiting for me to stick a dipstick in the tank. Hopefully I can get to that later today and eliminate the dimwit possiblity.
I appreciate the advice.
