Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

So wanted to give out some quick information out there for anyone with a P car that are going and willing to tackle a timing job on their car or variocam guide replacement on their own from what Ive run into.

First thing youll run into is that you need to lock timing (duh no brainer) making sure its at TDC for the bank you are working on below is a image of which direction the opposing banks cam should be aimed when working on current bank (ex.

as far as everything else goes its pretty straight forward with RTV appliance and timing your cams, but you WILL blow cam caps off and spew oil if you block the oil passages circled in red in the photo with rtv so a trick used and advised by rennvision and LN is to take your old oil pump o-ring cut it to a long enough size so it sticks out lube it with some type of assembly lube of your choice and put it in the recessed grooves on the head then install your cover back on and tighten it down to spec (12nm) then once everything is tighten I let it sit for maybe 15 minutes before pulling them out that way the rtv cant seep into the groove and it wont stick to the gasket because of the assemb

If working on bank 1 the cam shaft notch on bank 2 should be facing OUT) secondly most people used the aluminum blocks you get from the Porsche timing kit to hold the cams while loosening everything you CAN use that or you can use your old valve cover bolts and put two in up top and two on the bottom cam and put a zip tie around them as long as you arent forcefully rubbing the cams on the bolts youll be fine.
These are separate views of the same evidence. Frequency alone does not establish a fix, and these counts must not be added together.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Depending on which bank you are working on is which direction the notch on the front of the opposing bank should be facing
Used 8 of the old valve cover bolts and put them above and bellow the cams and wrapped a zip tie around them to secure the cams from falling while loosening variocam and camshaft caps before removal
Circled are the oil galleys on the head where rtv can get into and block causing excess pressure that will pop the cam plug seals off, this is where your lubricated o-ring would come into play by placing it inside these grooves and pulling out AFTER the head is torqued down to speck and left to sit for at least 5-10 minutes
Replacement cam cap bolts incase old ones are damaged, reused my old ones but if wanting to replace them these are what youll need at your local VW or FCP euro

The camshaft cap bolts and variocam bolts are all 5mm hex socket, the variocam bolts are easier to get out because they arent torque down as tight as the camshaft caps BUT IF by chance you just about round out the camshaft cap bolts with the wrong size hex socket the part number N10695301 from Volkswagen is a direct match/replacement for the camshaft cap bolts they will be a torx from Volkswagen or if you order from FCP Euro you will either get a 5mm hex or a torx. as far as everything else goes its pretty straight forward with RTV appliance and timing your cams, but you WILL blow cam caps off and spew oil if you block the oil passages circled in red in the photo with rtv so a trick used and advised by rennvision and LN is to take your old oil pump o-ring cut it to a long enough size so it sticks out lube it with some type of assembly lube of your choice and put it in the recessed grooves on the head then install your cover back on and tighten it down to spec (12nm) then once everything is tighten I let it sit for maybe 15 minutes before pulling them out that way the rtv cant seep into the groove and it wont stick to the gasket because of the assembly lube if this isnt done youll blow the cam shaft plugs off every time without fail. Reminder that when installing oil pump on bank 1 there is a notch thats the shape of a rectangle that should be facing up with the numbers 1-3 aiming towards the center of the engine, on bank two the notch should be facing down with the numbers 4-6 aiming towards the engine. If this isnt done you will get extremely high oil pressure and eventually lead to a tick noise which will scare you ****less at first but if you hear it turn it off immediately and orientate your scavenging pump the proper direction. Besides getting some tall jackstands or wheel curbs and setting aside two days of your time its a fairly straightforward process. Patience and attention is needed I would say got it done in my backyard with my homemade wheel cribs so good luck to those out there doing it themselves. 🤙🏽
