My sister had an expensive two-camera BlackView installed for her real estate business that barely lasted a year.

The thing that I like about it the most is the field of vision on the rear view when I'm using the rear camera (primary).

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

After my state (Colorado) ranked third in a recent survey on road rage incident data, I'm considering installing dash cams in my cars. Anyone here have recommendations on what to look for, and any direct experience for better or for worse? Id like to get the same setup in all the cars so ideally, the solution isn't unnecessarily expensive.
I don't care about recording track events or anything else with the intention of watching it later; I just want to have a good, discreet set of digital eyes that can provide evidence if, god forbid, it's ever necessary.
Please weigh in on brands and models that you have had good - or bad - experiences with, installation issues, etc.
Thanks
I've historically used Escort radar detectors. Several years ago that introduced an integrated dash camera called the M1. Basically it taps into the power that feeds the detectors. Saves having to run extra power cables.

I do have a new Garman Tandem dual lens dash camera for trips in the SUV.

What do you expect to gain from a dash cam? Are you expecting an accident?
If you are just worried about rude drivers, just let it go. It's not easy (I'm still practicing), but anything you do will not change their inherent behavior. Cameras will also catch your own misbehaviors, too, so be careful what you ask for.
Cameras are cheap insurance and provide hard evidence when you know you're not at fault when the "other guy" tries to blame you.
I can give you three recent examples where cameras would have provided hard evidence that we desperately needed to change the outcome of fault.
I'll give you one:
My mother was traveling to a doctor's appointment. She came to a light and waited in the left-hand turn lane. She was the last of among three cars waiting to turn left. The light changed and gave the driver's the proper left turn green arrow. All cars proceeded to turn left safely. Without warning, a person flew through the intersection and hit my mother at a high rate of speed. The speed limit was 25 mph. She hit my mother so hard it warped the car and knocked her out. Witnesses saw the woman fly through the intersection. The cops cited the driver for failure to yield/stop at a traffic light.. BUT!! And I mean a BIG BUT... the driver said she wasn't at fault because the light was green. They could not be absolute about her speed nor did witnesses see the light from her vantage point, and so she refused to admit fault and Progressive insurance called and said they would NOT pay one dime for the damage or the medical expenses for my mother. NOTHING!!! I'm like (sarcastically), "Thank you FLO, you stupid bitch! Your client almost killed my mother!!!!"
My parents insurance would also not pay for their medical. Therefore, they hired a lawyer to sue the driver which would officially change fault requiring Progressive Insurance to have to pay. One year later and no telling how many thousands wasted, the case goes to trial. They had witnesses, a traffic light expert, etc. But in the end, the driver got off because the public defender was able convenience two juries that it was possible the light malfunctioned.
If she have had a dash cam, things would have been different, IMHO. And no, unfortunately, there were no traffic cameras at that intersection.
I have dashcams in all my cars, I used to buy lukas which seem very good (including gps logging) however they don't hold up in very hot direct sunshine and after a few years they seem to error out.
So now in our two daily drivers I have Aukey cameras, no gps but good wide angle, quality video and inexpensive to replace:

my 996 still has a lukas but its garage parked and doesnt bake in the sun
Ugh that sucks, people lie all the time to get out of fault in crashes. Long ago something similar happened to my mom but it was a company car and single payer Healthcare so she didn't have any bills
There are a lot of cases where people purposely pull in front of you and hit the brakes hard so that you hit them. Then they sue. Quite common around here.
A big believer in dash cams here too. I've got two of the Aukey DR02's in my other cars and they work great. I've got a box with several various cam's that have failed over the years. I agree that their life doesn't seem to relate to their cost. My sister had an expensive two-camera BlackView installed for her real estate business that barely lasted a year.
*** Regardless which one you buy, look for "
Supercapacitor
" *** These used to be more expensive but now are only slightly more and hold up much better in the heat.
As far as the 996, I have a Galphi Q2 Wifi, still trying to figure where to mount it though.
Makes sense for an accident, but the original post was in respect to road rage. Like I said, I get the frustration. Today I watched a truck pull out right in front of the vehicle in front of me and proceed to go 30 mph in a 40 mph zone. Unfortunately, cameras do nothing to elevate rude drivers any more than getting mad. For those drivers the best we can hope for is the autonomous cars we were promised.
I'd be interested in hearing about any apps out there that turn your iPhone/Android into a dashcam. I did a little research a few months ago but nothing stood out. There was one app made by a dashcam manufacturer but it seems like they were mostly using it to try to sell the actual cam.
Better just to buy a cheap one. You'll forget on the day you need it. This one was recommended in the video linked above -- I also use it in my cars and have had a good experience in general with it. Low light performance is excellent.

I also use the Viofo A119. Best quality for the money. My v2 has run for years now.
Lots of idiots on video, but thankfully no accidents yet!
BTW, comes with a GPS receiver, but GPS speed is definitely OFF on mine. Not sure why I would want that recorded all the time.
You've never seen a road rage incident escalate where stuck a light, the rager jumps out and does something? Or with the fact that so many feel the need to carry a weapon that can be used without you ever leaving the car? Dash cams can provide needed evidence in a whole lot more than a accident, and no matter what you do, someone raging can be a threat. Have you never heard of or seen someone chase another car, follow them turn for turn. Dash cams are cheap and just provide a level of security that can help law officials get jackasses off the road, as well as aid in proving fault of accidents. If you are worried about a camera catching your shenanigans, than perhaps your driving is the issue? I can't really see a legitimate reason not to have a dash cam. I say that as someone who does not yet have any, and keep saying I have to get some. Both my wife and I are on the road a LOT with our jobs.
I have this for sale now. I Purchased it from a Rennlist Sponsor

So, what would you or I have done to enrage someone to get out of their car? I am sure that bad things can spontaneously happen, but such an event must be extremely rare. I would bet that in most cases there is some kind of
inciting
incident that started the whole fiasco. No one likes to think of themselves as the one being wrong, and police hear these stories every day. The first line of defense is going to be to not be the one that offends. That usually works pretty well. It's not that I am against dash cams, my point is that having a dash cam is not going to stop an offense, at best only record it. However, you can vastly improve your chances by not engaging with the "jackasses", as you call them, in the first place. There's virtually no chance that you can make the other person better, so why waste your time? I guess if you
really
have cause to worry about your safety, then Colorado does have concealed carry permits and they are a "shall issue" state. That's another can of worms.
Had a road rager on the highway cut in front of me and slam on the brakes and then proceed to drive 10 miles an hour for miles. I literally did nothing. Was driving in the lane he cut into for a while, never saw the guy, never changed lanes, never did anything. I didn't speed up and not let him in. I didn't cut anyone off. I watched the guy get on the highway at a ramp, I was in the left lane, not right where he merged into. He then cut in front of me and his shenanigans began. No idea what this nut cases issue was. People as ******** and crazy. They are everywhere and **** happens. You can play the fool and not have proof and it becomes a your word versus theirs. Good luck with your way of thinking in today's litigious society. CYA was never more prevalent then today.
Road rage idiots don't need a reason, and victim blaming isn't the answer. To believe otherwise is a bit, well, naive.
Recently, I was in slow traffic in the right lane which gets backed up for an interstate entrance ramp to the right.
A red truck comes flying up in the left lane and cuts me off to get into the right lane. I didn't even have a chance to instigate anything, and I actually braked to let him in.
He then waives his arm out the window, yelling at me, and throws a full fast-food drink out the window at me (missing). As we get on the interstate, he goes 45 in front of me, cutting me off to stay in front of me if I try to pass. I finally swiped him off on some other traffic, and had to exit soon.
I have absolutely no idea what set him off, or why it was directed at me. A dashcam won't necessarily prevent anything, but I'd rather have evidence than not.
Edit: And I wasn't even driving the Porsche, just an unassuming Mazda.
Wondering if anyone else has thought about a discrete way to run a dash cam, radar detector, and still be able to use a windshield screen/sun shade. I've mounted my V1 Gen 2 using a blend mound. Has anyone mounted a dash cam above the rear view mirror mount, since most sun shades have a cut out ther?
I purchased a Pormido D50 and it meets my needs. In fact, it may be a bit of overkill. It has three cameras, rear, front and interior cabin. All or none are presented on the mirror that comes with the kit. It does all of the time, date, lane departure, reverse lines, GPS stuff, plus a little more. The screen is touch screen. The thing that I like about it the most is the field of vision on the rear view when I'm using the rear camera (primary). I don't know the exact angles but it is significantly wider, it virtually eliminates blind spots. My intent was to tech up my 20 year old car. Again, not for everyone but it works for me.
On the first day of my TX trip I had some fellow in a pickup go postal. I am not aware of having done anything, but this guy was plainly put out. I let him lead until he turned off, where he honked and gestured. I was wondering if the rear spoiler going up could have been taken as some kind of "F you"? That's the only thing I can think of besides simple idiocy.
