Suggestion

If you decide to replace the seal, also replace the conductor plate ($150 part) and the connector housing ($10 part) as they will be out of the transmission anyway, and are known to fail.

Oh, so the next time the fluid is changed, you remove that arm, change the seal, and slap it back together in 3 hours?

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Does anyone know what's involved in replacing the selector shaft seal on my 2003 996? I'm not getting any leaks on my garage floor but there are leaks around the shaft link and bolts. Should I leave it alone or spend the money to fix it?

POST 2Original post

The transmission must be disassembled to replace the $3 seal. It’s a major undertaking and very expensive unless you DIY.

POST 3Original post

That's the Mercedes 722.6 Tiptronic, not the manual gearbox. That seal can be replaced by removing the valve body with the trans in the car. If you decide to replace the seal, also replace the conductor plate ($150 part) and the connector housing ($10 part) as they will be out of the transmission anyway, and are known to fail. I would expect 4-6 hours labor from a shop, I did it in 3 hours.

POST 4Original post

Oh, so the next time the fluid is changed, you remove that arm, change the seal, and slap it back together in 3 hours? I have the same leak.

POST 5Original post

It's a little more involved than a fluid change. The transmission pan has to be removed, then the electrical connector housing, then the valve body. With the valve body out you can get to the snap ring that holds the selector shaft into the tarns.
