I didnt find much luck testing for rattles with a rubber mallet against visible exhaust components, but something else I found this morning was that the noise only seems to happen once that car has some warmth in it.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I recently noticed my 01 911 Carrera is making a strange rattling / induction-y noise when letting off the throttle. The noise only begins to occur when revs drop to around 2k. The noise isnt there above it if I were to rev it up. Any thoughts what this might be? Happy to include a sound clip as well.

POST 3Original post

Few questions, the sound only happens while the RPMs drop, not if you hold it? Can you hear it out of both exhausts or only one? Louder on one side than the other? Any exhaust modifications ever? how many KMs on the vehicle, and has there been any Catalyst System Efficiency Below Threshold codes like p0430 or p0420? I would manually rev it or have a friend rev it, with your ear near the intake manifold, listen for rattling there. could just be your intake valve. you can pull your air intake off and see if its acting funky visually as well. Other than that, exhaust heat shields, blown out catalytic converters, could be a number of things in the exhaust system.

Thanks for the response! It does seem like it can be heard from either side of the vehicle and does seem to be most notable when letting off the throttle while rpms drop from 2k and below. While on throttle, it drives super smoothly and no sound. The only modifications Im aware of here are the exhaust tips and the K&N air intake. It currently has about 77k miles / 123k km. I havent had it plugged into an OBD2 reader, but theres no CEL on at all.

Grab a rubber mallet and start whacking exhaust parts underneath, listen for rattles, and also what i mentioned in the previous response (see edit). I'm staying on the optimistic side of cheap, replaceable parts and not worn out, soon to detonate engine parts. (timing chain tensioner, guides, variocam)

I didnt find much luck testing for rattles with a rubber mallet against visible exhaust components, but something else I found this morning was that the noise only seems to happen once that car has some warmth in it. Otherwise no noise at all until the car has been idling for a while (again, that noise only occurs after letting off the throttle around 2k)

POST 7 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Oh, I also forgot to add that oil pressure and levels look great. Car starts at a higher pressure and as it warms up, the pressure drops to around 2 bar. Also no smoking or unexpected exhaust activity

did you whack while warm as well as cold?

POST 9 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Ah well I started doing it maybe 2 or 3 hours since it was last run, so definitely not right after I shut it off but also not while the car was completely cold. I can definitely try again with the car fully warm

Sounds like loose internal Exhaust parts Cats/Mufflers to me ...
