Restored my headlights today, used a Mequire's kit with a couple sand paper grades and a buffing tool used with a drill.

Looks like some folks had luck with using the rubber gasket.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hey guys, removed my headlights today to refinish them and apply XPEL protective films, and found this gasket type thing on the inner side of the headlight was falling apart. I can't seem to find it in any of the parts diagrams, anyone happen to know the part number or a link to where I can buy replacements?
Thanks!
Chris
Restored my headlights today, used a Mequire's kit with a couple sand paper grades and a buffing tool used with a drill. Took about 45 minutes per headlight. Hard to tell from the pic, but the left light is before, right is after (notice orange blinker is clearer on left.) No more yellow tinge to the plastic, either. Tomorrow I'm putting on some XPEL protection films.
The original pic is before it was restored, just cleaned with windex, you can see the haze. Look like new headlights now, surprising how much better it makes the front of the car look. I'll try to take some close ups when I put the XPEL films on later today.

will sell them to you for $150.00 each (

).
If $300 for some rubber seems excessive, another way to go is to buy this stuff

or something similar.
I have the same issue. Haven't tried the solutions above but if you do please let us know how it goes.
I re-surfaced my lights as well, they were in bad shape. They still have a very slight yellow tinge (maybe I'm a perfectionist). Does anyone know if the yellowing is always only on the surface or if it can go deeper into the plastic? When I did them I knew they were in bad shape so I started with 400 grain sand paper and worked my way up to polish.
I believe that these are the part numbers:
Passenger side 996.631.172.00
Drivers side 996.631.171.00
I was not able to find them available on the parts websites. Please let us know if you find them!
Looks like there's actually supposed to be a seal going the entire way around the headlight, mine is just completely gone. Have to buy a whole new headlight assembly if you want a new seal. Looks like some folks had luck with using the rubber gasket. I might just go without it for now unless someone knows if there's a real reason to replace it?
International mericantile specelizes in remanufacturing obsolete rubber bits. Maybe since 996 are classics now maybe he would start production if enough folks pester, uh, ask him?
