Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Going to put it in my 03 996 Read about using a Castrol oil bottle cap to block the Helmholtz and get the sound.
Leading evidence: 'Use castrol oil bottle cap' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Use castrol oil bottle cap' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.
Source reports, not a diagnosis or a success probability. Counts refer to discussions and can overlap.

Porsche spends millions of $$$ on research and has all the data on hand and only needs to make decisions on which part to use on which car.

The different "mufflers' and the different plastic pipes probably only cost .02- .03 cents each to make in high volume, they just have to make the decision which one to use on what car.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

yeah that's what I thought. yet another incorrect herd direction. why would porsche increase the sound of the 997 yet still retain that dastardly resonator?
OP - Also read this 996 forum’s post from 5-21-18. I believe the above-mentioned article mostly addresses what, on our engines, are the resonators between intake runners. The airbox Helmholtz is purposed a bit differently.
Definitive answer on the Hermann von Helmholtz resonator?
The MAF sensors used on Porsche 996 997 986 987 are the "hot film" type and only measure flow in one direction,( there is also smoothing of the signal done in the DME.) The "reversion" or back wave/pulse does not effect the Total measured intake air flow.
IF you look at the intake pipe for 986 Part #8 in the diagram there are 6 different ones offered for the M96 engine in the 986, part #9 is called a "muffler", the tiptronic actually has two of them while the one for the 50 years Spyder has no muffler/resonator..

The different "mufflers' and the different plastic pipes probably only cost .02- .03 cents each to make in high volume, they just have to make the decision which one to use on what car. Looks like they chose two" muffllers" on the Tiptronic, one "muffler" on most others, and "no muffler" on the 50 year Spyder.
Other cars or brands with different MAF sensors can be effected by "reversion" or back waves. The "hot wire" type of MAF sensor is one that will measure flow in both directions and if reversion or back waves are present it will add them to the Total signal and will be over-reporting. Helmholtz resonators are very useful on those with "Hot Wire MAF Sensors"
The article referenced above is a "blanket over-view" and not be used as true for all applications..

Was any of my above post clear enough?? ^^^ Sometimes I have a hard time keeping it simple enough for Laymen, but Technical enough for Pro's who just need a "little" more Technical info, and I end up mixing the two a lot and ends up sounding like gibberish to many but me.
Without feedback or comment I have no way of judging and improving my communication skillz, after all I am a 45 year DealerTechnician who's best asset has been wrenching/diagnosing (not communication/wordsmithing)
Thanks man, I really appreciate it !!!
A lot of times when I present opposing facts/theories, I'm confident in my facts/theories, but not confident in the way I present them....
All of your and others contributions are appreciated. The well thought out photos contributed by everyone help. Id like to contribute more myself, but its too cold at the moment, even in the garage.
Thanks, you contribute a lot as well, as do many others here. I think there are more people here in this forum right now with valuable practical knowledge of cars in general and 996 in particular than I have seen in the 10 years I have been on RL !!
I LOVE to see that, when someone ask's a question it gets answered quickly and accurately !!
Ive been in the trades for awhile as well as an airline pilot so I know enough to be dangerous. Generators are big part of what I do now, so pile on the tech. It definitely helps me make intelligent decisions on what I do next.
WOW !! Airline Pilot ! My Dad flew Crop Dusters after WWII, I prefer to keep rubber on the ground...lol
LOL..
Not to be flippant or anything, but the simple answer is "because they wanted to", they had already spent the $$ for research and had all the Data on hand, so they just used it all instead of leaving some of it unused..
If you need a more Technical answer, I would need to know what you think/understand, then I could troubleshoot it and fill in the blanks, or point out the errors and it would be up to you to accept/wrap your head around it.
I just got a 997 3.8 airbox. Going to put it in my 03 996 Read about using a Castrol oil bottle cap to block the Helmholtz and get the sound. Pros cons?
