I replaced my shifter console with one out of a 997 and was able to adjust the cables without the tool.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I been looking at the green/white shifter cable alignment tool on ebay (and other stores) but I am amazed at the cost. All seem to be >$30 with shipping.
I hate to be a cheapskate but will any one lend me their tool? If you want to sell it to me at a reasonable cost that be even better. I am in north central Ohio. If you live in Ohio I can possibly even drive out to you. Would like the chance to meet another 996 enthusiast.

It's fairly obvious visually when the position is off and the shifter out of gear/in neutral.
Lol yeah apparently there is. People kept saying on old threads it was a couple of dollars but amazed at the current cost.
So awesome for fellow enthusiast like Sleepy willing to go out of their way to share something like this.

I have changed the consoles out many times. You don't need this tool at all. PM me if you want more detail, but it's very simple to line it up.
All the alignment tool does is hold the shifter in an upright position (correct position) while you attach the cables into the little plastic clips on the shifter. If you didnt mark the original location correctly and put the cable into the wrong notch, it will be immediately visible to you by eye because the shifter will either lean left or right or to forward or back. All you have to do is just place it in the notch that puts it in the correct position (or a custom position you may like better than the stock position). It doesnt affect the way the shifter works, it only affects the position of the shifter in on the x, y, and z axes.
Trust me this is very simple and nothing that you would get stuck on. Even if you somehow screwed it up, the car would still drive the same and youd have a shifter that doesnt look straight. You could always get the tool after or have a mechanic fix it, but Id be surprised it anyone needs it.
As someone mentioned when you install Cup Car cables or Numeric, they dont work with an alignment tool and you basically align it yourself by eye in a somewhat similar fashion.
