And yes, I disconnected battery prior to installation.

It cycled the fuel pump and did the engine oil level check like normal.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hi All, I just replaced my 2002 996 ignition switch following Pedro's guide. All is fine until I tried to start the car. The key goes in fine, turns fine, dash lights turn on and does a normal oil level check. One that's completed, it beeps and tell me there's an Air Bag Failure fault and my wing is upright.
Car does not start, and the electricals don't work. I was going to re-do the work but my seat went back to my memory position and I can't fit back into the footwell area.
Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated!
Do you have any aftermarket electronics? Especially non factory HID’s? Did you disconnect the battery when replacing the switch?
I had aftermarket hids on a halogen 2003 996, caused weird things like you describe, especially the wing. Replaced the switch. It was tight and so needed replacement. Chased down the electrical weirdness. Even bought a Porsche foxwell scanner. Found some obscure post about aftermarket hid’s. Took them off. Never had a problem again.
I would first start in making sure the harness is seated with the battery disconnected. I would also hit and hold brakes with battery disconnected for 10 or 15 seconds to discharge all power from Ecu.
good luck
Thank you, steam_mill. I don't have any aftermarket electronics, and I didn't do the work after disconnecting the battery. I did notice that it was behaving weirdly with my windows not closing and the key fob not working. I plugged the battery into a trickle charger and just tried in the garage the seats, lights, and key fob work now. I'm guessing it's acting up with the battery going flat.
I re-did the work and made sure the switch is positioned properly. Everything lights up, hvac fan blows, etc - but doesn't start or turn over. Will also try again tomorrow morning by installing the old switch just to test. Maybe it's a bad new part.
I followed the Pedro's tutorial part number to match up on a local car parts site (
https://germanparts.ca/parts/porsche...nition-switch/
). It looks identical to the old one I yanked out.
I got my switch at Audi dealer on Queensway/427. Exact part. I did get a uro switch from amazon first. It worked fine. $19 delivery by Tuesday. I have kept the uro as backup.
I used Audi p/n 4A0-905-849-B, it was about $40. No problems other than aches and pains from squeezing in to get under the dash. And yes, I disconnected battery prior to installation.
Did you remove the negative terminal BEFORE doing this procedure? And, did you happen to remove the seat and start the car with it removed or disconnected?
Problem solved!
The switch comes with the turning **** is a random direction so I realized that its important that the new switch is positioned to off. I matched the new and old switch and copied the orientation, but then I realized the old worn out switch likely isnt a good reference point. In order to fix it; put the new switch in the slot under the footwell, press against it, and reach up with the key and I turned slowly to feel the key click into position (seated in position), then plugged in the harness. It cycled the fuel pump and did the engine oil level check like normal. All electrical gremlins gone.
TLDR: make sure the switch is seated correctly and that the key is able to slot into the end, otherwise all sorts of temporary gremlins will pop up.
Nice. I was concerned about this as well when I did mine because the key position with the old switch was very vague. I guess I was lucky that I had it right the first time.
