Suggestion

I'd just replace the injectors, if the old ones were put back in, run good oil and change it 5k miles or 6 months and drive the snot out of the thing.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

The car I bought I may 2021 has a M96/01AT Porsche factory replacement engine ("Short block") that was build and installed by Porsche Center Norway in October 2019). I have searched but does not find any characteristics of the AT engines; what are their strengts, what problems have been fixed (if any; eg IMS, bore scoring, etc). Anyone know any AT replacement (short block / long block) engine facts? (Illustration from when my car got the new engine...)

POST 2Original post

Looks like a rattle can rebuild. (Not meant to be snarky) I get nervous when I see that.

what ever, its the qualities inside that maters. Do you have any qualified knowledge wrt the M96/01AT engine except the look of it?

POST 4Original post

The new short blocks dont have any improvements other then the large ims bearing that requires u to split the case to change.

POST 5 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source post: 17679978

so no improvement wrt bore scoring?

POST 6Original post

Yes They r exactly the same as they were for the last of the 996 cars. Porsche has no interest in fixing old problems. There newer engines have bore scoring issues too. They dont want to deal with the expense or enviromental issues to do it right.

POST 7Original post

You have a clean slate with new bores so nothing to really worry about. Treat the car good, drive it a lot and you won't have bore scoring issues most likely.

POST 8Original post

I have one and have no complaints/issues. You are better off with it vs the original motor in my opinion.

POST 9 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source post: 17680022

thanks, yes so I have been told. Im just wondering why there is so little information about the AT engines.

POST 10Original post

Quotes source post: 17680153

I just think there really isn't much to report on. As mentioned, some later engines received the upgraded IMS bearing but there were no other significant improvements and developments made to the engine, from what I understand. This was probably the time where Porsche was developing the next family of engines, be it the M97 or the DFI motors and it made no sense to sink RND into something that won't be used in new production cars any longer. I'd just replace the injectors, if the old ones were put back in, run good oil and change it 5k miles or 6 months and drive the snot out of the thing. More often than not, it's the cars that are not driven and babied are the ones that suffer from issues you read about.
