Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

34 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

0 evidence records excluded for query context · 0 excluded by outcome qualification · 0 adjusted by outcome qualification.

2 acknowledgements have no verified action link; they do not establish a repair result.

I tried Dr Colorchip and it worked "pretty" good on the metal parts, but, i was was a little disappointed in the application on the plastic front bumper.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

i was thinking about having the bumper & hood on my 996 cab re-sprayed due to stone chips. can anyone recommend a great shop in the boston area? i'm pretty **** and i really want it done right. thanks.

POST 2Original post

Hey Sratner...welcome to the board. I wanted to give some advice before you have it shot. Take pictures. The reason being is that if you decide to sell it down the road, the assumption of the car being in an accident can be documented. I had my front resprayed and documented (pictures) just in case a PPI flagged the respray.

POST 3Original post

Mike's Autobody in Malden . He's a PCA member/supporter, and does a lot of p-car work. He painted my hardtop with a perfect color match.

POST 4Original post

I recently Dr. Colorchip'd mine, much better but not like a respray of course. I assume you're going to clear-bra it as well?

I tried Dr Colorchip and it worked "pretty" good on the metal parts, but, i was was a little disappointed in the application on the plastic front bumper. Don't think its the Colorchip's fault, its just difficult to get the paint to adhere properly and usually, the resultant chip usually mars the finish. Have talked w/ several paint specialists and they say the only way to get total satisfaction is to respray. Especially, it you will clear bra afterward...

POST 6 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

thanks alex. i appreciate the advice and the welcome. i will take some photos before the re-spray. also, i hadn't thought about the clear bra but it sounds like the right thing to do. i'm assuming there's a waiting period after the re-spray before the clear bra can be applied. can anyone think of reasons not not to do the bra? i love this place and i love this car.

POST 7Original post

I have the clear bra (Autobahn I think is what the dealer called it). It does absorb the rock chip abuse, but occasionally looks worse than a ship would if the plastic gets nicked and raised above the level of the paint. Taking it off sometimes results in the lifting off with the plastic of previously unrecognized chips which had been held in place by the plastic. Not sure I would bother if I had to do it again.

POST 8Original post

This is my 3rd Porsche, and every one has had rock damage and chipped paint on both the bumper and hood. The 'patina' is a sign that your 911 is being used, driven like they were designed. I find it harder to drive after a respray because it looks too nice. Maybe the clear bra is the answer...after a respray.

POST 9Original post

sratner, if you're really **** you need to also consider that respraying is not simply a matter of color matching. It doesn't always hold up too well on plastic bumpers depending on if the paint mix is "too hard" or "too soft", and it won't be like original paint since it's not the same product & application as the factory. So you may be good, or you may end up with even more stone chips than you bargained for. I agree w/ Barn996, in that patina is nothing to be covered up unless it's really bad, and that it'll just get that way again.

POST 10Original post

I got a recommendation for West Foreign Auto Body on this board a few years ago. Since then they've painted my aero kit and a new rear bumper for me. All the parts look fantastic, and I've always been happy with the service. On the aero kit, I had the clear bra put across the front bumper by Wheel Dynamix. It's been a little over a year and it still looks great (other than where a jackass parked to close to me). Even that mark is on the film and it didn't touch the paint so I feel like the bra did it's job. Shawn

POST 12Original post

i only go to sansossio autbody in natick, they have done a lot of work for me and many friends, very reasonable prices, very good work

POST 13Original post

What is the approximate cost to just have the front bumper resprayed? Is black a more difficult color to blend?

POST 14Original post

+1 Steve... after the re-paint of mine I was scared all the time and it seemed about once a week i took a tiny chip.... really ate at me... I felt much better when it was more chipped up, but it looked worse - its a tough call as which is harder to mentally deal with

POST 15Original post

We can be too **** with our Porsches, or at least I can. I just remind myself that my car is 11 years old this year, and Dr,. Ferdinand would rather see one of his cars with patina, indicating usage, rather than a sparkling, unused perfect example.

POST 16Original post

Dick's Autobody is probably the best painter in the area... but on the pricier side as well because of it.

POST 17Original post

There's a shop called Invisible Touch in Bedford. The owner's a little bit like the 'soup ****' but if you bring a p car, and he likes you, he'll treat you and your car like it's his car.

POST 18Original post

not sure I would want anyone to treat me like I was thier car??

POST 20 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I'm going with Dick's. I used them a long time ago and they were excellent. I've wrestled with the pros and cons of respraying and i've decided to do it. I'll still drive the **** out of the car...i'm addicted. I'll let you guys know how I make out.

POST 22Original post

I thing the attachement nuts for the hood are painted on when the underside is painted. I would still want the hood off when painted and have the paint stripped so that non of the galvanizing takes damage from sanding. Then probably have the hood reattached after drying and then touch up the attachment area. What ever the case it would be nice if the painter has the right stuff for priming galvanizing.

POST 23Original post

If you get the respray make sure you wait a month before applying the clear bra because the paint is still breathing..and its ok to be **** aren't we all in someway. Goodluck

+1 and don't wax it or apply a synthetic protectant on it for at least 30 days for the same reason mentioned above ^.

POST 27 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Big day today. I picked up the car today from dicks and it looks amazing! I swear it looks brand new. The guy that worked on my car is an artist. No kidding. They painted the bumper, the hood and blended the fenders. They even removed some blemishes from around the car. It really looks beautiful. Glad I did it!

POST 28Original post

you are uploading them right??? (the pics?) Congrats, bet it feels nice - word of caution, dont tailgate! Those little flying paint chippers are out to get us!

You can't possibly post something like this and then NOT include pics... you will get roasted... Glad you went with Dick's - they are the best in Boston metro as far as I can remember. PICS OR BAN!

POST 30Original post

Quotes source post: 7608191

Will you have a clear bra installed now to protect the newly painted surface? I would be afraid to drive the car now because it's too perfect.

POST 31 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

here's some pics. sorry for the delay, i've been driving her as much as i can making up for the time she spent at dicks. she looks beautiful! not sure i'll clear bra the car. at least i'll have a month or so to decide. i'm pretty much a stock guy. i've done the four stalk/obc upgrade, ipod, three spoke wheel and short shifter. not sure i'll do much else. i just love driving her. all you guys have been great. i've learned so much here. now for another rocket ride. peace.

POST 32Original post

VERY NICE! Looks like new. Let us know how the paint holds up to road use. Lots of opinons on resprays IRT original hardness and durability. Do you know what brand of paint they used?

POST 33Original post

Very Nice! It's amazing what a good body shop can do. I'd do the clear bra, especially on a black car

POST 34Original post

You ought to be very pleased with the outcome, looks purdy!
