Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

16 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

How far away does you key fob work from the car? I have to stand right next to the drivers door for it to work. Sometimes I have to hold it near the windows. Is mine broken?

POST 2Original post

Mine works from about 20' but it is dependent on my angle of approach.

POST 3Original post

There is a TSB to improve the signal distance. I did it a few years ago, but my range still sucks. Maybe 10'-15' or so. There is a DIY on Renntech (login required) http://www.renntech.org/forums/tutor...662-made-easy/ http://www.renntech.org/forums/topic...662-made-easy/

POST 4Original post

What I can't figure out is why my range varies so much from locking to unlocking the car. When I get out of the car and lock it, I usually have to be standing right next to it. If I try to lock it while I'm walking away, 9 times out of 10 I have to turn around and walk right back up to the car. When I come back to the car and unlock it, the remote usually works fine from at least 20 feet away.

POST 5 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks, I will give it a try the next few days!

POST 6Original post

I'll ask the obvious: have you tried a new battery?

POST 7Original post

I got a new fob recently (freshly programmed, with a new battery) and range is only good for a couple of feet.

POST 8Original post

Here is a trick, hold the key fob next to your temple and improve your range massively! No joke! http://www.apartmenttherapy.com/tech...care-rem-83663

POST 9Original post

Or you can try this. Hold the key against the bottom of your chin, open your mouth wide and then depress the lock/unlock button while keeping key against your chin. Crazy but works like a charm. Your head amplifies the signal LIKE A BOSS. I have a giant head, so it works even better for me

ok. Smart Guy! Did not know my new to me 996 key had a replaceable battery. My BMW does not have a replaceable battery and is charged when in the ignition. Anyways, swapped out the battery and my distance has improved... Thanks I will check later on the improved distance... lol

It works by just holding any key fob to your throat as well. No need to open one's mouth.

POST 12Original post

Consider yourself lucky your key fob still works...for any distance! The key fob circuit boards typically go bad and you have to get a new one and have it programmed by the dealer for your car.

POST 13Original post

The mk1 immobilizers have a screwable antenna jack right on the unit itself. They deleted this in the later models.

POST 14 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Fortunately, I have 3 keys for the car. I guess they all have old batteries.

POST 15Original post

I meant to say check under your seat and see if you have the alarm with the screwed in antenna connection. If you do, make sure it's tight and not corroded. Spray electrical contact cleaner like Deoxit if you find any hints of corrosion. I've done this before and improved my reception over 2x distance.

Same here ... TSB (see below) helped, but not that much.
