Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

13 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

0 evidence records excluded for query context · 0 excluded by outcome qualification · 0 adjusted by outcome qualification.

1 acknowledgements have no verified action link; they do not establish a repair result.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hello rennlist. I'm a newb seeking assistance with my 996. I have a 2001 996, tiptronic w/ 127K miles. Recently it has developed a rattle when under light or no load. When under load/throttle, the noise goes away. I am seeing a few different things in forums. 1. The rattle is slap from the timing chain and it is not a big deal. 2. The rattle is slap from the timing chain and it IS a big deal. 3. The transmission is making the noise and may or may not be a big deal. As you can see, this really doesn't help me pin down the issue or help develop some sort of expectations for repair (or not). Any info would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

POST 2Original post

4) The rattle is due to loose heat shielding, and is no big deal. 5) The rattle is due to something banging around inside a muffler or pipe, and is no big deal. 6) The rattle is due to a chunking catalytic converter, and is only a big deal if you need an emissions sticker.

POST 3Original post

Time to get under the car and, while it's off, go to town on the exhaust system with a rubber mallet. If you can recreate the rattle with the car off, you're stoked. If you determine the rattle is from the engine, defer to someone who knows more. Not necessarily a mechanic, but maybe a club member with some M96 mechanical experience.

+1 9/10 times a rattle is the heat shield or one of the cats. Correct advice to take a rubber mallet and get under the car and see what is going on before taking the doomsday approach.

I had a slight rattle at start-up on my 99 996, and it disappeared after replacing the rear engine mounts.

POST 6Original post

I had a slight case of the VD, and after I sacrificed a bat and ate a pot pie, it cleared up.

POST 7Original post

I have similar and my mechanic stated broken exhaust bracket. Scheduled to have it done in the next week or so. Exact same symptoms as you. It sounds ugly, so I want it fixed.

+1 My car sounds like some rocks in a dryer due to a bad muffler.

POST 9Original post

Quotes source post: 12540637

Wow - a broken exhaust bracket? The muffler brackets on our cars are massively overbuilt - I can't imagine what would cause one to break. Unless maybe he's talking about the bracket for the cats. Mine is busted; took it off and need to get around to replacing it. I can't fathom what you'd have to do to a 996 to break the muffler bracket...those things are built like the A-10 design team got involved...

POST 10Original post

Back into a high curb or parking block at the right angle will damage the muffler brackets. The rear bumper will flex while the brackets are rigid and will break.

POST 11Original post

I have a 2001 tip 108k miles that is going into the garage tomorrow to have my rattle noise finally sorted. It turns out it's play in the carden shaft! I have never come across this problem before mentioned on the forum. I did manage to get the main dealer to spend a day looking for it for free after they messed me about!!

POST 12Original post

5chn3ll, that's what he said last time I was in the shop. He's usually pretty precise as well. No contact with anything, but I do have a 1999 so it's basically 16 years old. It goes in the end of next week, so I'll post the results.
