Changed from summer tires to all-seasons in November and that December drove from Virginia back to New Jersey through a bad ice/rain/snowstorm.

Two tips for max storage capacity: (1) absolutely fill the space behind the driver's seat, to the roof, and (2) use some of the space under the rear glass (not enough to block your view though).

My advice, fwiw, snow or winter tires a pain to change but necessary (my only scary time due to 4-season tires on fresh snow), find a good brushless car wash if salty roads but still need to power wash in spring, “disposable floor mats”.
Replace dt 5w-40 oil every 4-5k miles max, getting uoa

Changing DT 5w-40 oil every 4-5k miles max, getting UOA with every oil change, rinsing road salts off as often as possible....price i pay for putting on so many miles but i wouldnt change a thing.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hi guys, long time no see.
I'm considering getting back to the 996 world after 2 years of abstinence. I used to own an air cooled model (1985 targa) and a 2001 996 turbo but ending up selling them for a number of reasons.
The thing is I'm getting a bit nostalgic, mainly about my 996 TT, and I'm considering to buy a 996 as a daily driver : rain or shine, winter, etc. My ideal model would be a cabriolet C4. Also, I noticed that the values have gone up quite sharply in the last two years. So, long story short, here's my concerns :
- Does anyone have experience with a 996 as a daily driver ? Please bear in my that I live In Montreal, Canada where our winters are awful...
- Is the IMS issue treatments have changed in the last two years (new parts, new way to check it, etc...) ?
- Would a C2 be decent in the snow (with good tires) ?
- How about he increasing values, do you guys have the same reading as I do ?
- What's the overall reliability of your non turbo 996, and particularly the electric aspect of it ?
I thank you in advance for your replies, and merry Christmas !
Pics for attention... :
I have only had mine for a year, but do drive it every day. And with snow tires, no concerns about going anywhere. This is my third (first had an 86 Carrera and then a 99 C2) and all were daily drivers.
I used my 996 as a daily driver for a year. It was 'ok'. I didn't find it very comfortable, and the gas mileage wasn't great. So I sold it. Also, even though it had snow tires, it couldn't clear more than a few inches of snow because it sits low.
Test a few cars before you make the commitment as a daily.
I summer daily mine. To be honest, if I had to drive it in the city, or traffic, I wouldn't. A couple of times a year I take the kids to school in it and it is a terrible city car.
Maybe it would be different with a tiptronic.
Ive been daily driving my 03 4s in NJ since end of August, 130 miles per day. Love every mile, best part of my day! Bought the car in March 2019 with only 21,700 miles on it, went over 50,000 last Monday. Just got my winter tires mounted, drive it rain, snow, whatever. Changing DT 5w-40 oil every 4-5k miles max, getting UOA with every oil change, rinsing road salts off as often as possible....price i pay for putting on so many miles but i wouldnt change a thing.
My second 911 was a '99 C4 that I drove as a daily for about a year. Enjoyed it for the most part and was never let down. Changed from summer tires to all-seasons in November and that December drove from Virginia back to New Jersey through a bad ice/rain/snowstorm. We passed countless cars either pulled over to the side or by accident slid off the road because of conditions. The Porsche just went straight and steady the whole way never losing traction or control, very secure.
I just love driving my manual C2 as much as possible, even in the city. Every drive in our family car (5-series) feels like a lost opportunity to get a little bit more out of an otherwise mundane trip. Not much snow here though.
My 996 C4S was my daily driver in the Colorado mountains. I ran proper winter tires from mid October through mid May. It was a great car in all but deep snow conditions.
Our C2 cab/Tip has been a daily driver for a year and a half, 113k miles now and we love it. Feel special when driving it, and it's practical with a child seat and storage space in back seats, and 23.5 mpg. We do live in Los Angeles county so not hot or cold and little rain.
I've daily driven my 99 c2 tip in Edmonton since the winter of 2017 and I have never been stuck. Over the course of 4 winters, I can think of less than 10 times I left the 911 home and took my 3rd vehicle. The only issue as others have stated is more than 4 to 6 inches of fresh snow is where it can struggle. Ian a city like Edmonton our major roads are plowed fairly quickly, so even during heavy snowfall it is rare to accumulate 6 inches of fresh snow. Ice and compacted snow covered roads have not been a problem at all. I use Micheline X-ice tires with 17 inch inch rims
Daily drive my 996 C4S MT. She snarls and buzzes (semi-solid mounts) stiff clutch also. Occasional drives in the country, she comes into her own. Delight to drive. Love it.
My daily driver is a MB ML350 SUV which does most of the things I need to do in terms of hauling things. What it can't do, my F250 can.
I never haul more than one other person, so that's not an issue but I woulld never drive my 2000 C4 Cab daily. For me, it's a "fun" car that would be too small/limiting for grocery/hardware store runs and would be no fun at all to drive in the rain.
The same also applies to my Vette, MR2 and BMW.
I daily drove my C4S for the last three years. Great car as it has good ac and heat (came from my 964 which didnt have working ac) and comfortable ride, even with the x73 suspension. With COVID I dont drive it enough as I am still working from home. Change oil every 5,000 miles and enjoy!
Frida, my 2004 C2 Tiptronic Coupe has been my daily driver and only car for 7 years. Got her at 47K, now at 90K. I live in San Francisco and work in the city (remotely, now) so I don't have a proper commute or anything.
It's been fantastic. Now with an 8-month old girl, we have a rear-facing car seat that fits in the back well enough. And we can pile an absolute ton of stuff into the car -- this pic is from a recent road trip to Paso Robles, this is everything that fit in the car plus two adults, mom and dad. Two tips for max storage capacity: (1) absolutely fill the space behind the driver's seat, to the roof, and (2) use some of the space under the rear glass (not enough to block your view though).
I’ve traveled with a companion who loves to pack “extras” for family, luggage and 2 small dogs. They love to occupy the space afforded by rear seats being folded. Have not had to use yet, but have Porsche roof rails and a basket if needed. Otherwise she handles daily trips to work and weekend back road burning with aplomb.
I believe in using it.

Thank you guys. I can see that some of you drive a C2 in the winter when there isn't too much snow. That's nice.
I saw a very nice 2001 C2 cab with hard top yesterday, bone stock, second owner. I wonder if this could work all year roud, since I don't drive everyday and I still have my wife's car as a backup if there's a big snow storm or something.
But still, the next one in line in my shopping is a 996.2 red cab, C4. Can't wait to see it...
Again, thank you so much for your inputs, it's very helpful.
Daily drove my c4 cab all year. Put hardtop on in winter and even took it skiing with ski rack. Since divirce I no longer have the nice garage and cannot get salt off daily so I do not drive it as much in winter. The Macan has taken ove most winter duty
+1 on above, I’ve got a ‘00 996 C2, no traction control, running summers and all-seasons in winter, daily commute year-round in Maryland. My advice, fwiw, snow or winter tires a pain to change but necessary (my only scary time due to 4-season tires on fresh snow), find a good brushless car wash if salty roads but still need to power wash in spring, “disposable floor mats”. A C4 would be easier to drive, a C2 also awesome in snow, buy and drive it like you stole it.
Nico911 - C’mon, ya know ya gotta have the C4S or Turbo ragtop! Hardtop and snows for seasonal flexibility. That ginormous whole in your heart will get sutured closed. You’ll find the one!
