Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Mine is a 996.2, so it was gonna be over $4K just to replace the IMSB with one of the LN Retrofits, and even more with "while you're in there".
Leading evidence: 'Replace imsb' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). I am contemplating ordering a UAOS to replace my perfectly functioning AOS when the tranny is out.

Is it worth less $$$ to use the faster/higher skill level technique to perform the same end result??
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I have called a few different shops in the area to inquire about an IMSB install. The car in question is a 2000 coupe with the ZF tiptronic. Shop # 1 says the engine can stay and the transmission can be removed separate. Shop # 2 was adamant that the engine and transmission must be removed together. I was under the impression that the 996.1 with the ZF could be removed separate and the 996.2 with the MB could not. Can anyone confirm this ?
The transmission can be removed with the engine in place. The 996.2 tip can be removed with engine in place as well, but it's a bit harder. The question to ask your mechanic is the labor time to drop just the tranny or drop the whole thing. Of course if the engine comes out you are looking at a coolant refill and other "while you're in there" repairs, such as vacuum lines, hoses, AOS, etc.
My 02 996 has a sizable tranny fluid leak between the case opposite the bell housing. My mechanic said he could remove it with the engine in place. The plan is to fix it before spring.
Thank you for the insight. Annoying part is the engine and transmission were removed last year by the previous owner for various oil leak repairs and a new AOS but being that the work was done at a Porsche dealership there was no work done to the IMSB. Apparently they are known ignore that mode of failure lol.
There's plenty of evidence of the "If it ain't broke don't fix it" plan that works quite successfully. It's the fact that anything can fail at any time is what drives a lot of us to do the "While in there" repairs. And don't forget, most of us are on the forums because there's something wrong with our car. As stated many times, it may or may not be a true representation of the whole 996 market.
I am contemplating ordering a UAOS to replace my perfectly functioning AOS when the tranny is out. At that point I almost wish the engine was out, as even with the tranny out of the way it will still be a royal pain to change.
yes I am all about doing things proactively "while im in there". hence this weekends project... water pump, thermostat, belt, and new idler/ tensioner pulleys. all functioning as they should but also 21 years old. UAOS is also on my radar even though mine is almost new and working fine.
As to the 996 ownership as a whole, I know 3 people who own a 996 / 986 and have no clue what I was talking about when I mentioned the IMS bearing. Perhaps ignorance really is bliss
Ignorance is bliss sometimes. It took me just over a year to find my 996 while I immersed myself in Rennlist. I was lucky to find one with a very recent complete engine rebuild that already had the IMS Solution done by a shop that I've known for years. I was looking for a manual shift, but I couldn't pass up the fresh engine. So Porsche got even with me by having the tip leak profusely to the point where my transmission started to slip.
If you were ever curious Sunset Porsche lists a tiptronic transmission for my car to the tune of $17k and some change. Now I know how the poor folks in the 997 forum feel when they have PDK failures. Of course I am not ordering a new transmission. There is a transmission specialty shop an hour from me that can fix it, he just didn't want to take it out of the car. I'll have that done at one shop and bring the transmission to the other shop.

^^^ Until it isn't... bury your head at your own risk...
That's what my mechanic said, but I can't provide any deeper confirmation. Mine is a 996.2, so it was gonna be over $4K just to replace the IMSB with one of the LN Retrofits, and even more with "while you're in there".
Why do youi care what the mechanic does after you drop the car off? If you agree to his pricing, leave him to do his job. The classic air cool 911 engine can be dropped without the gearbox with it, but nobody I know ever does it that way. They take out the engine and gearbox at the same time.
I take a lot of engines out of various Porsches. Whether or not the 996.1 Tipt can be removed with or without the engine, I would always choose to take the engine out.
I care because I want to know if im getting screwed over or not. The shop that said they have to remove the engine and tranny was $1500 more expensive.
My Indy always drops both to do the IMSB replacement. I have him do other engine-out preventative work at the same time to spread out some of the labor costs.
I can confirm that the ZF Tiptronic CAN be removed without engine/trans (power unit assembly) removal. But a different technique/skill level is required, and is not the "official Porsche procedure"..
The 996.2 MB 722.6 Tiptronic does have an "official Porsche procedure" for removing the the Tiptronic only.
Same thing with the 996TT manual trans removal, the official Porsche procedure require engine/trans (power unit assembly) removal only, but with a different technique and higher skill level the transmission only can be removed in much less time.
Is it worth less $$$ to use the faster/higher skill level technique to perform the same end result?? That is subjective....
.Kinda like doing the Micro-Laser Heart Valve replacement vs the open the chest up/ remove the complete Heart to do a Heart Valve replacement..
PT3: Is there an official procedure to remove just the 722.6 tranny available in print? I've searched many times for procedures on how to remove the tranny and found none that did not involve removing the engine with it.
There is "somewhere", also there is an "Official Time Standard" for Tiptronic only removal VS engine/trans (power unit) removal for the 996.2..(easy to find in Time Standards)..
I have also seen the printed specs on piston/cylinder clearance and bearing/crankshaft clearances that are said not to exist. I didn't print them out and save, (thought it would be easier to find them again in the system). I have stacks of printed and saved material that I hate to rummage through !!!
