Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Leading evidence: 'Install 997 ssk at christmas and love it' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'cold transmission/fluid' (1 discussions; 0 report identifying it and 1 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Install 997 ssk at christmas and love it' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

I think part of the problem is a cold transmission/fluid.

Suggestion
change your transmission oil with fresh OEM fluid; consensus is that OEM is best for the street, as other trans fluids are formulated more for racing conditions and don't lend themselves well to low temperature performance

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

It's 45 degrees in WDC so i ust pulled out the C4S out of its long winter nap. I installed the 997 SSK at Christmas and love it. However, reverse and 1st are a bit notchey and hard to engage.
suggestions?
The notchiness originates in the transmission, and is exacerbated with short shift kits, as the trade off for shorter throws is increased shifting effort (shorter lever = less mechanical advantage). And that notchy feeling is made worse in cold weather, due to the thickened trans oil. But there are a couple steps you can take that may help.
Suggestions:
1. double check that your shifter linkage is aligned properly
2. change your transmission oil with fresh OEM fluid; consensus is that OEM is best for the street, as other trans fluids are formulated more for racing conditions and don't lend themselves well to low temperature performance
3. (not to shamelessly plug my products, but this is relevant in your case...) worn out engine and transmission mounts can be a source of difficult to engage gears, and stiffening these points will lead to more positive gear engagement
4. from a driver standpoint, make sure you fully depress the clutch and pause for a second; you can also try engaging 2nd gear momentarily before throwing the car into 1st
I'd look at getting the pcar alignment tool for the shifter. If the notchiness didn't go away after a few minutes the issue is not related to your tranny fluid. Come to think of you would have a stiff shifter not notchiness with cold fluid.
When I bought a new shifter (the 997 GT3 shifter) for my 1999 996, it came with that alignment tool attached to the shifter--and it looked just like that one but for my 1999 996/Boxter rather than 2005-2012 Boxter. Not sure if they're the same but seems like you'd want your model year.
It holds the shift lever at "center" (left-right and up-down). With the transmission levers each at center as well, you can then put the cable ends straight in the shifter connectors. A link with pics is here and the adjustment of the shifter begins on step 46 and goes from there. Tom
