Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hi all, I have enjoyed my 7th Porsche and 03 C4S now for past 2 yrs, but over the wknd I drove a 2010 Carrera S Cab PDK and wow - nice car! My C4S is nice and I love having a manual, but I could see why PDK's appealing, esp with the 3.8 liter with 400hp. Importantly, now that I'm thinking about 997.2, I'm now thinking about the 991 S Cab as I hear the chassis is EVEN BETTER...and I plan to check it out this week. In addition, I'm also thinking about a 997.2 Turbo S - there are two PDK 2012 cabs that were $175k MSRP asking around $100k...and wondering if that might be worth checking out. Bottom line, I know Bruce Anderson says buy the newest best condition Porsche, but I find it so ironic that the older/rawer Porsches from the 70's/80's and even the 995's are the ones worth $35-50k, and yet I'm thinking about the 997/991's even as collectors are looking backwards(and why I should probably never sell my C4S as the prices should start coming back up also). Sorry for rambling, but really would be curious others' experiences if they've gone thru this. Patrick

POST 2Original post

do a search - plenty of info on 991 vs 997. bottom line, drive em both...it is about the differences that only matter to you

POST 3Original post

Personally I prefer the 997.1 or .2 more than the 991, driven a few 991's and they are very nice cars, but seems too big and like too much is going on (technology, mostly).

POST 4Original post

My choice would be influenced by the psychology that I use to justify my P-car purchases. That is, I will buy what I think is the best car for the $ and which also meets my current desires. If I had to choose today, I would probably choose the 997.2 or a 996.2 turbo. Both are becoming real bargains in my opinion, and either would satisfy me. I also am naturally resistant to increased size and weight, and complicated electronics still give me pause. In my mind the 991 is still too expensive for me. But that is how I think, and it works for my budget. Everyone's budget and perception of what will satisfy may be different. Buy to satisfy yourself and not anyone else.

I replaced a 2002 996 C4 with a 2012 997.2 TT PDK with 24k miles (not the "S" version) back in November 2014. The MSRP on my car was $175k which included $25k in options. I paid right at $94k. I couldn't justify the cost of the "S" version which has 35 hp more and PCCB standard....the other differences were made up in options. I loved the 996 C4 but it was time for me to change. I appreciate the additional 180 hp of the TT. The car is a rocket on the road. My only reference on the 991 is that I have a friend with a 2010 997.2 GT3 MT and a 2014 991 GT3 PDK and likes the more nimble 997. These cars are all excellent, it's a matter of taste and what your wallet can endure.

I replaced my 2002 996 C4S last summer with a 997.1 turbo cabriolet. I'm very happy with the change, even though I loved my 996. I agree with the comments above. You need to decide what you want and how much you are willing to pay. I looked at a very diverse group of Porsches before I bought one, including: 996 turbo, 997.1 turbo, 997.2 C4S, new Cayman GTS and new 991 C2. Each car had things that appealed to me. I wasn't shopping for a cabriolet, but I found the right car at the right price and the deal fell together. I'm very pleased with the final outcome.
