Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Also, I'm not digging into mine today, the shop is being used so I have to put it off until next week :/
Leading evidence: 'Use so i have' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Check flaps as well' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

I'm actually going to start digging into my car tomorrow to check my flaps as well.

Suggestion
My cost to repair the flap was under $10 in parts.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

There's some kind of dark gray/black open cell foam that is breaking away from something and chunks are blowing out the vents. Are the hoses lined on the inside? Is it something else? Does it need to be fixed? I doesn't seem to affect the operation of the system. Thanks in advance.
The slip joints in the ductwork have foam gasket material - all cars.
Any flaps or diverters ( center cents vs footwell vs defroster ) also have foam on them.
[sarcasm]I'm pretty sure those are bits of your IMS bearing, spraying all over the place...[/sarcasm]
I've had that in previous cars, but not my 996. Unless it's a high volume of foam, I don't think it's anything to worry about.
lol
It's not a huge deal. It dries out, and that's that. You may lose a little air volume due to leakage, as long as the ductwork stays together it's a non event.
I was going to say IMS but the guys with blown engines don't think it's funny. My far right passenger vent has lost volume. I assume you get under the dash to fix that? Any ideas how to get to it?
There have been several threads describing the issue here on RL and other sites - and it's not just a 996 thing. Same thing happened in my Corvette and most other 15+ year old cars.
The second link below includes a description of how to address the issue. Good luck!

I repaired mine. Not overly difficult just time consuming. The hardest part is contorting yoursel up under the dash. If you take it to the dealer, they will most definitely tear your dashboard apart and sell you a new heater core. I can't imagine what the book time on that job would be! My cost to repair the flap was under $10 in parts.
look at this thread also:

Most of us know about the larger heat/air cond door mentioned above, there are also (3?) other foam covered diverter doors in the system.

Just to illuminate...that flap is not "inside the heater core"...It's in the duct system (it's the diverter flap). The "heater core" is a small radiator that is a "in line" (i.e. - hot water/coolant flows through it) part of the heating/cooling system.
^^ True.
I'm curious if the other flaps *need* to be repaired, or if the larger flap will solve the lack of heat issue? Also, I'm not digging into mine today, the shop is being used so I have to put it off until next week :/
