Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

7 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

1 acknowledgements have no verified action link; they do not establish a repair result.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Curious if anyone else has had the problem with the clear coat coming off. So far I am really seeing it on the passenger fender really bad and around the lights. The whole car pretty much has an issue, you can see that the paint almost looks faded. I will add some photos in a few minutes. No doubt it will have to be painted.

POST 2Original post

My 99 has some areas of impending clear coat failure from years of neglect. You can slow it down but not fix it without a respray unfortunately.

POST 3Original post

I have not had any clear coat issues, but I do have problems with the hood paint flaking off along the back edge of the front trunk lid, and I also lose more paint than I should when I get rock chips on this surface. My car is garaged whenever I'm not driving it, and with only 69K total miles (55K before I got it 2 years ago), it spent a lot of time under cover before I got it, so my clear coat may not have had as much UV exposure as others. Panels that get the most UV but no rock damage (i.e. the roof) are in awesome shape on my '99.

POST 4Original post

if the base coat (colored coat) was oxidized or allowed to sit unprotected for any length of time, once recleared it would not match and could stand out like a sore thumb. Also the clearcoat could likely never truly fill "just the void" properly. Best bet ... allow a body shop to refinish the area professionally and blend into other areas unless an entire repaint is in the cards.

POST 6Original post

Dino oil with 15k change interval. yes my 2001 car has 2 spots of clear coming off. 117k miles. Lots of rock chips on bumper cover and 1st 1/3 of hood. sometime in the furture I'll get it fixed but not right now.

POST 7 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks, I was thinking that it was just my car from being neglected. I am already planning to have it painted, the clear coat is bugging me every time I look at it.
