Although I'm hoping the 997 isn't going to require an immediate parts replacing regimen.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Looks like 2005 - 2009 is all I will be able to afford. My first choice so far is this one at a Porsche dealer. 65,000 seems like a lot of miles for a 2008 but this doesn't scare me as much with a TT. Some really nice options including locking dif. **Additional Equipment 220 - Axle-Differential Lock Rear 342 - Heated Seats 404 - 19" Turbo wheels 425 - Rear Wiper 480 - Manual transmission 640 - Sport Chrono Package Turbo 810 - Floor Mats in Interior Color 9Q - Meteor Grey Metallic P01 - Adaptive Sports Seats RA - Special Leather Cocoa XCZ - Sport Shifter XME - Rear Center Console in Exterior Color XPA - Thicker Steering Wheel in Leather XSC - Porsche Crest in Headrests XTG - Inner Sill Finishers in Leather XTV - Door Finishers in Leather

POST 3 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Yeh, lol. Problem is, I know the guys here and trust their knowledge and opinions. Its still a 911. I think the mileage is scaring buyers away and the dealer needs to move it. I have been lurking there (997 forum) for awhile but like Gonzo said, much more fun/debate/drama, (not boring) here.

POST 4Original post

Moving fast! Good for you. I am not well educated on the TT's except for every time I see one I think for a few seconds that instead of two 996's I should have bought one TT. But probably too much car for me. I personally wouldn't let the mileage scare me at all. My C2 has 84k miles and it runs just as well as the C4S with 44k on the chassis and 8k on the engine. I expected to have some suspension issues or something by now, but everything is still in good condition. With your proven mechanical ability I think you could handle anything that it needs, or doesn't need. Stunning looking car by the way. And know that you are always welcome in the neighborhood.

POST 5Original post

I have been looking into the 997 TT as well and they are really cheap for what they have to offer. mileage should not be a problem but it scares many buyer who want a garage queen so high mileage are the best deal I think. The color combo is very good. I have to say that considering how people drive these cars and how bulletproof they are, I believe buying at auction may be the best thing to do. None of them have been mistreated and the dealer will not offer you any warranty anyways. I would only buy at a dealer if I could get a CPO or something like that. But again sometime they do receive trade-in that they are ready to sell for pretty close to auction price to save themselves the hassle. only thing I would really want as an option would be full leather interior. that is the only thing you really cannot retrofit easily.

POST 6Original post

Nice looking car and great options! Go for it! TTs have better resale anyway and reading some of the other threads, I'm confident that you are mechanically very skilled, so it shouldn't scare you one bit.

POST 7Original post

Nice looking TT, didn't take long to find. How many have you looked at?

POST 9Original post

I would buy a TT with 165k miles if the price was right. Those cars are invincible besides the coolant pipes (not sure if that is an issue on the 997s though).

+996. Start the fear mongering on all the 997tt forums then go back to the dealer in a few weeks in which case, they should still have it and bring along print outs of all the catastrophic failure pics to illustrate that you'd be taking a HUGE risk with that car and those miles. Then bend them over and DO NOT apply the lube before walking out with a great deal.

POST 11 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

All great points and I see stuff I can fix. It looks like the spoiler is stuck but not sure. Bumper lip looks like its got some rash too. I don't think the 2008's still have the coolant pipe issues but I might be wrong.

POST 12Original post

The 2008 is an awesome car in the TT. There are some reports of excessive oil consumption but if you can get service records it will help. If it hasn't happened at 40K miles you'll be fine. GET IT!

POST 13Original post

What I meant was bring all of Jakes pics that apply to the regular m96 motor to show. If they're not Porsche guys, they won't know the difference.

POST 14Original post

All Mezger engines (ie. 997TT until 2009, 2010+ is DFI ) have the same coolant pipe issues. Drop driveline, pin fittings, re-install...DIY

POST 15Original post

Buy it. I wouldn't worry about that mileage at all.

POST 16Original post

KK, I think most of us here would appreciate it if you would start scaring the crap out of the 997TT crowd with pictures and complex DIY talk about imminent failures. Bring down that 997TT price to sub $30k in a year, make us proud.

POST 17Original post

Looks like a nicely optioned car, desirable color and the mileage is fine. How much are they asking?

POST 18Original post

65K miles doesn't seem bad at all. And, look at it this way: I seem to recall that you don't put a ton of miles on your cars, right? So, after a few years of ownership, the combined average number of miles per year ratio will decrease. Then, when you want to sell it, it won't be a higher than average mileage car. Now, I need to PM the mods. As devioustrap pointed out, you can't post that in this forum.

POST 19Original post

KK - since this is at a dealer any chance they will CPO it for you? I can't remember the limit on number of years from in service date - I seem to think it was 6 years.

Really nice color combo and great options... A stuck spoiler and pinning the coolant pipes can be expensive. And the rear diff might need a rebuild at that kind of mileage as well if not done already...

POST 21Original post

if DIY, the pinning(or welding, if a pro/have friend) of coolant pipes is 'free'

POST 22Original post

Quotes source post: 11541417

Besides the skill/knowledge required to pin the pipes, you have to remove the entire engine. Which is significantly more hours on a turbo than na 996... Even with engine out, 'expert' pinning is not inexpensive. About $3,000 to have a shop do the entire job... http://sharkwerks.com/porsche/techni...urbo-cars.html

POST 23Original post

I speak from experience here.... Turbo engine does NOT take significantly longer. Pinning is free minus the screws and a tap, and coolant. Welding requires some O-rings/gaskets.

POST 24Original post

Go for it KK, Im in a similar position, really tempted to move on from my 40th, been looking at 997 TTs or even trying to stretch to a 997 C2 GTS. If you go for it I would be interested to see what you think of it

POST 25 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I agree it will be different but dropping, removing, or rebuilding any engine doesn't deter me. In fact I'm looking forward to the new challenges a 997 will present and know I will enjoy the learning experience. Although I'm hoping the 997 isn't going to require an immediate parts replacing regimen. COOLANT PIPES? From what I've read, the coolant pipe issue is mostly a problem with tracked TT's. We all know any 997 I get will not be overly stressed performance wise. In fact its laughable that I would even consider tracking anything other than a race prepped Porsche. All I need now is the assurance that JR has an oil recommendation for the TT that will perform as well as JG does for the NA engine.

POST 26Original post

Common recommendations for oil: Rotella T6 5w40(what I use), Mobil Delvac 5w40, Mobil 5w50, Motul, etc 5w40-5w50 (5/10w60 in very hot climates)

POST 27Original post

I can still vividly remember when you were in the hunt for your 996....those NUMEROUS THREADS were "fun"

POST 28Original post

It IS a relief to see that you've already identified a mode of failure you can worry about while waiting to actually take possession of the new car.

POST 29Original post

Absolutely. Can I put dibs on your new 997 Turbo after you do address every soft spot and decide to sell it cheap because you want something else? True enough... Coolant pipes probably won't let go just sitting in the garage! :-) The good news is if the failure occurs, you don't necessarily trash your engine... Unless you are on the track and spin into a wall (or dump coolant and have somebody else spin). I'm always careful to spot any Turbo's out at the same time when I'm at open track days... Never seen one let go, but know several who have.

POST 30Original post

are we still living in this high mileage paranoia thing? come on rennlisters! service history, overall condition those are the important factors, unless it was a 996 then it will def blowup!!! right?,i just get a little tired of the mis info and hype surrounding our cars,do your homework ,dont rush, get a PPI,its a porsche, yes it will cost a few more bucks to keep it going, but they are built extremely well and will provide years of fun.........good luck!

POST 31Original post

Great looking car. You're welcome here anytime you like. Get the new car down a little - looks like a 4x4.
