Generally a 996 is not considered early production unless it was made 8/98 or earlier (production started around 11/97), so you probably have the updated spring/clutch pedal, but its easy enough to pop your head under there and check before buying anything.

Its not that expensive so I would likely just order one before removing the old one if there is no way to check before removal.

If you do decide to replace the spring make sure to check your build date/which style you have before ordering a new one since the early cars used a different design.

It seems I'm the new owner of my first Porsche. It's a '99 996 Cabriolet 6sp. I drove it the other day and am picking it up next week. 93K, very clean and tight. Bumpers painted but no other bodywork. IMS done. No funny engine noises. No smoke. Everything seems to work, roof, windows, heat, a/c etc. The only thing wrong I can see is the ashtray lid on the center console won't close. It's missing a visor mirror cover too. I'm equal parts psyched and nervous. It's what I don't see that concerns me.

Is that a boxster red interior I see to match the top? Either way nice spec and nice looking car! Enjoy! And ownership is not as scary as some make it out to be. Just drive it and perform your standard maintenance and you should get many years and thousands of miles of enjoyment out of it.
Boxster Red it is. I believe this car was also ordered with the limited slip differential...not that I'll get much use out of it, but it's a nice-to-know. It also comes with the factory hardtop.
I have a 2018 Jeep Wrangler 6sp with a clutch that an 8-year old could work. This car is NOT that! Picture me at the gym working the leg machine with only my left foot.
Congrats and welcome to Porsche ownership, great combo on your car. Looks well cared for.
They are great cars, do some digging and have a look at some of the preventative maintenance items to address with age (ie fuel injectors, water pump, AOS- to new UAOS, vario cam pads, tensioners, IMS solution, suspension components etc.). Good info to further familiarize yourself with as you maintain and enjoy the car. You’ll find lots of great diy articles and helpful members on this site to share discussion with. Welcome aboard
Big thanks. I was in the car biz for over 20 years including 12 on the autobody side. I have a pretty good eye for a "rat", and this is the opposite. You can tell when a car has been taken apart and put back together several times. Vehicle history shows 7 owners, but fortunately for this car, all of them kept it in good nick.
I've started going through the threads including the DIY. I wouldn't call myself a "wrench", but I can handle a bit. Other than the IMS bearing that's been done, it appears to be bone stock. I'm inclined to leave it that way and just keep things running smooth.
Anyway, glad to be in the club. Better late than never.
Awesome! Congratulations. You are now on the same slippery slope as all of us.
And it looks like you've got your first thing to fix, if the clutch pedal force is too much. There is a 'helper' spring that breaks. They all do it. Here's mine. Replacing it is fiddly, but easy. It makes the pedal pretty light. Seems too light for type of car. Some replace it with the version for the turbo which uses a different spring.
Wait until you experience the flying foam bits from AC vents...
Welcome to the group!
Yowza congrats that is a very well optioned cab. Ordinary to be nervous after a big purchase, however, you will shortly see why we all champion these cars.
Enjoy in best of health - welcome to the madness!
Actually, the first task is cleaning out the garage. It was my woodshop and coffee roastery for several years. Roastery grew and moved to a proper building and I haven't done much woodworking in years. Time to sell some stuff, and make some room. The two motorcycles that have been sleeping outside on the porch will be happy too. Anyone need a 2018 Harley Heritage?
Thanks for the helper spring tip, but don't tell the seller. He's only had it for a few weeks and is selling because he hurt his leg.
If your clutch is stiff that spring is likely the culprit, as the clutch is very soft like a Honda if the spring is functioning properly. Personally I removed that clutch spring altogether and believe the clutch has a much better feel without it and it is still much lighter than most of the manual classics I have had. If you do decide to replace the spring make sure to check your build date/which style you have before ordering a new one since the early cars used a different design. See Image:
Additionally here is a whole thread about removing it:
https://rennlist.com/forums/996-foru...tically-2.html
Funny you mention that. When I was selling cars back in the 80s and 90s I came up with a "funny to me" icebreaker to handle the "what's your best price" question. I put together a binder that included all the parts I could find on a particular model and added up all the prices. When a customer popped the question I replied, "today is you lucky day. If purchased separately, this car would cost you $236,482. But today you can buy them for only $25,600 and we'll even put it together for you."
I got nuthin'.
On these 3.4 engines the actuators that vary the timing have hard plastic pads that wear over time.
Its a simple value that should be pulled when a PPI is done.
To replace them is usually an engine out service.
Welcome to the club. The more you drive these cars the more you are going to like them. If you get involved in the porsche lifestyle, going to cars and biers, concourse shows, drives, social activities, the porsche itch will byte you and more than likely you will want to either upgrade or get another one. In my case I bought a 03 turbo coupe. No I aint selling my 99, my problem now is that there are not enough days in the week to drive both cars. These cars have a real bad enemy, heat. Highly recommend you remove the front bumper and clean between radiators and condensers. If you get into the PCA get togethers more than likely youll meet someone that has a durametric, hell be able to show you the cam deviations fuel trims and other cool things about the current status of your car.
Wow that is a nice car, well optioned.
I've also read that Clutches can get heavy when worn as well, I believe, not just from that spring. If it is that spring, I have a home depot spring set to install in mine, cost 2$, do a search here in forums for part #.
Anyhooo, welcome to the club. I'm a new first Porsche owner as well
It's awesome you got a 99 early car with cable throttle. I spent money on a tune to fix the awful e-throttle lag. And you have an LSD, which should have been stock on these cars imho. Sweet!
Not that I disagree, but I have pushed my targa pretty hard and haven't noticed any inside wheelspin like I did with my LSD-less Z4 and other cars. I suspect it takes a great deal to bring it on, possibly more than I would be comfortable with on the street.
OP congrats on the car! As others have said it looks to have been ordered by someone with a very happy option list pen. I would have a P(ost)PI done at a reputable shop to get a feel for the health of the engine and transmission, then drive it and enjoy it. Do oil changes more frequently than recommended, 5K miles is not a bad idea. You might think about a transaxle oil change too if the service records don't show one having been done. Also clean the radiators if there is no record of that being done either.
Generally a 996 is not considered early production unless it was made 8/98 or earlier (production started around 11/97), so you probably have the updated spring/clutch pedal, but its easy enough to pop your head under there and check before buying anything.
I was going to bring this up. I just got my clutch replaced and its still quite heavy and bites about half way. I have to check my assist spring (Could have been removed for all I know). Is there any way to tell if its broken without removing? Its not that expensive so I would likely just order one before removing the old one if there is no way to check before removal.
EDIT: I just got in there and looked up and the spring is there, and pressing the clutch in, it appears to still be in one piece from what I can see. When clutch is pressed, can see the spring itself, but man was it difficult to physically push the clutch in with my hand while in that position. I guess I should just order the spring and replace it and see if its any better.
I did the same thing and pulled up the build sheet for my car when I got it along with original window sticker. Whoever originally ordered it must have really liked the M96 cause it was just shy of turbo money, may have even gotten into a basic turbo, not sure exactly what they went for. All in, my cars MSRP was $133,000 back in 2003. It is a C4 Cab.
Is that a hole in the leather? The photo is kinda low res so it's hard to see if that is the issue.. You can remove the shifter and take it to an upholstery shop or you could order an entire shifter brand new but that would be your most expensive option. 3rd probably middle-ground option is to find a nice aftermarket **** if you don't mind a non-stock look.
There are a few slick looking aftermarket ***** on some cars on here. I have seen some Rennline ***** on forum members' cars that have a classic aluminum ball look
https://www.rennline.com/rennline-al...***-sku-i14-1/
Black Forest Industries makes a very nice ****:
https://blackforestindustries.com/collections/996
I know Momo makes some cool shift *****. There are a few people who make the "layered wood" classic Porsche / Carrera GT shift **** but I don't recall the manufacturer names of those. Pelican has one on their site.
Lots and lots of attractive aftermarket options for a fraction of the cost.
^ Great question. I do not speak from experience; but one would also need to purchase a boot which adds to the cost. BFI makes fancy ones. Here is a nice looking one for $50:
https://zealousinteriors.com/product/996_shift_boot/
This is potentially true, however, my mission for this thread was to illustrate to a new member that there are lots of solutions out there for his problem. What I posted is what 15 seconds of googling gets you - I'm certain you could find a color-match solution if that is what is most important to you. Won't comment on cost.
In my case the aftermarket **** came with the boot and bezel.
I got it from a Ebay guy in Germany. He has several different styles and colors.
https://www.ebay.com/itm/Porsche-Sch...c8TDe0nedkJvVQ
I'm not concerned about matching the color. There is clearly enough red inside this car.
As far as separating the boot from the ****, I don't see how. It seems all one piece on this car, but I could be mistaken.
Also, I got the correct part number from my local dealer, searched and I found this...
https://www.ebay.com/itm/203731860756#vi-desc-maincntr
He does great work. I've ended up ordered a couple
details here, including where I got the replacement shift boot:
https://rennlist.com/forums/996-foru...l#post16796661
I have one of these ICT shift ****/boot combos. It's not the cheapest. It's really nice. And, I ordered it on a Saturday and it was in my hands on Tuesday - from Germany!
Correct in that the leather is all one piece from the **** into the boot. All you have to do is remove the lower black plastic on the center console, pry up to pop the tabs around the boot, then pull up on the **** to slide it off. The aftermarket boots require a ziptie to hold them in place with an aftermarket **** that doesn't have an integrated boot.
Well this thread is about to take a turn. I spent the morning working out pickup details with the seller of this car. I decided I would brave the Jersey Shore traffic on Monday and head down very early to get ahead of it.
Fast forward a few hours and I get a phone call from his wife saying "I'm sorry, but I don't want him to sell the car, OK?" I said, no..... it's not OK. We shook hands and made a deal. I already put it on my insurance.
When I went to see it, I offered to leave a healthy deposit and write up a bill of sale on the spot, but he said it wasn't necessary. He took the listings down and I thought we would be OK. I texted him after hearing from his wife and he confirmed that he changed his mind. He said I'll be the first one he calls when he decides to sell. I said "Please don't bother."
Que sera. I guess I'm going shopping again.
Anyone in the group dabble in the black arts? How much to put a curse on the car?
He took it down from FB, but it's still on CL

Oh the irony:
"
Serious buyers only
Message me if youre ready to buy"
He told me several people have offered him 20K face to face and he turned it down. I offered his full asking price and in the end, he turned that down too.
It would be amusing if a few "less than well intentioned" folks would offer him 30 or 40K, make appointments and then change their mind. But that would be bad karma. It obviously wasn't meant to be and maybe I was saved from a hidden fate.
Don't know.
You can go on BAT, Pcar, Rennlist Marketplace, Porsche excellence, and other sources for inventory and see what the going prices are.
Comes down to what cab model (996.1, 996.2,997.1,997.2) you like/want, and what variation (C2,C4, C4S,Turbo,Turbo S), and what you are willing to pay for it.
For the 996, we on the 996 forum collectively know all the issues and solutions. For the 997, you would have to go to the 997 forum to ask. 997.1 engine is pretty much the same as the 3.6 996.2 engine. The 997.2 engine is not. Wish I could give you insight on the engine but don't have any experience with it.
If more hp is important, you can take a look at the 996.2 which is 320. If you want a wide body 996.2 take a look at the c4s cab. You may also be able to find a 996 turbo cab for a decent price which has the 996.2 look. The good and bad news is that cabs were more expensive new in general than coupes, but today they are less expensive.
Buy a mustang or Camaro if your looking for power if want finesse and style buy a 911 C4S if you want the same but cheaper buy a Boxster S it will tick most of your boxes
I went in the middle and got a 996.2 X51. 345 hp. Of course, I didn't know it when I bought it and neither did the dealer I bought from. I only found out when I pulled the build sheet it was a factory X51 car.
This is what I got for my 986S that I've carried over to my 996. My current car came with the Carbon Fiber **** which I loved but it was badly cracking as most of them do, and it was bothering me. This one lights up and matches the color of the radio and air controls when lit up, so it looks really nice and great feel. It comes all as one piece so its a nice and easy swap.
https://www.ebay.com/itm/252917695458
I would pay the difference assuming both cars have similar mileage and maintenance .now if that 06 cab is in mid 40s range, for $10k more Ill go for a turbo coupe, thats a lot of car at that price point.
Sorry, just saw the seller backed out. I can't stand time wasters like that. I get people change their minds, but figure all that out before you list the car. I'd have some VERY choice words for them at this point.
I am sorry to hear that the seller backed out. That is messed up. I am not super familiar with the 997 market right now, but low 30s for a 997 seems on the cheaper side for a base 997, and especially for a S. Like Glen (GC996) said you should really just buy what you want/like. There are plenty of good 996s out there if that is what you really want. 997 hard tops are virtually non-existent by the way. I believe there is a way to retrofit a 996 hard top onto a 997.1 though.
I found a nice '99 996 cab asking $28k with 64k miles that was purchased in 2011 from a dealer and driven only 11k miles hence. It had the LSD and was nicely optioned in Ocean Blue metallic over grey with black top and a hardtop.
Before I got a chance to negotiate price I heard back from the seller of the 997 that it was still available. The price was only $8.5k more and from what I've seen, that's well below the going trend for these cars. It has 74k miles and, as it turns out, is owned by a Rennlist'er and long time PCA member. He's purchased this car 2 years ago from a dealer and apparently it's been well taken care of before and since. It has an AutoCheck score of 80. No accidents or issues reported. I read through most of his threads and it sure sounds like he was committed to sorting this car right.
It is really nicely optioned from the factory and he did some intake and exhaust work on it adding SS headers and cats, IPD plenum and chip tuned to match the increased airflow. Allegedly horsepower might be closer to 400 now instead of the stock 355. Not that that is the most important consideration, but it couldn't hurt. With the adjustable factory Sport Exhaust System, I can't wait to hear it. I'm not a big mod guy, but I do like helping a car breath better. If I bought a stock car I would not likely do the work he did, but as long as it's done, I will enjoy it. There are no codes and it runs, "Like New". No scratches or dents on the body, interior clean as well.
So...hopefully all's well that ends well. We'll see. Now I just have to figure out if I fly out and drive it back, or send a truck to get it. I might have to go get it. See I own a nice wooden sail & oar boat that was built by the almost 300 year old Lowell Boat Shop in Amesbury, MA. The seller happens to live 2 miles from the historic building. I might have to visit the nice folks at Lowell. I like nice coincidences.
So I guess this will get me kicked out of the 996 club. I hope the folks over at the 997 club are as great as you guys...
Just so you know check the cost of the transport. My turbo was in Riverside California they would have to truck it all the way to Katy Texas, 1698 miles. Anyway I was quoted almost $2000 . I flew and drove it back for a total of $700. Yes my time well Im retired so I work for me inc. its also a wonderful experience and you get to know the car real well. I also put it to the test. There is a lot of dessert and big inclines on I 10. Between 6-7 hours I was doing 85-90 mph with ac on full at the outside temp was as high as 116. Car didnt consume any oil and the coolant temperature was excellent. Regarding the 996 frum, maybe you can keep both cars if your economic situation allows for. I believe the 996s will continue to go up in value.
This was an endurance test, assures me I got a good driving car.
Slow your roll there! One car at a time! But probably not a bad hedge on this inflation crap.
I just bought a plane ticket to Boston for $139. Gas and tolls back? Who knows. I got shipping quotes around $450, but it sounds like a big hassle scheduling and adding another few levels of uncertainty.
Good luck with the car. It looks like a nice example. Definitely update us here on how it goes before you jet off to the 997 forum. I would personally recommend driving it home. Everyone has there own preferences, but it can be a real blast to get to test out your new toy when you pick it up. When I bought mine I flew from Spokane to Seattle. Picked it up in Seattle drove it down to Portland to pick up a new set of taillights and then back home to Spokane. I put about 600 miles on it in that first weekend and had a great time and got a real feel for the car. I have also done the NJ/NY to Boston drive many times and you can take some really fun routes. The Jersey Turnpike will forever remain one of my least favorite roads though.
The 997 sounds like a much better car. Normally, I would suggest a pre-purchase inspection.
Shipping a car can be fraught with dangers. I have known of one example where the freight truck caught fire and the trucker was not insured. That $450 price sounds scary.
Good luck with the purchase and the drive. Please let us know how it all works out and I hope you have a wonderful time!
Sounds like an incredible opportunity to offer him a much lower take it or leave it price. My guess is he thought he had it sold to another buyer for more than your price and it fell through. Wife had nothing to do with it. Life is to short to get worked up about the quirks of human nature,
So if all goes well with the funds transfer and title release at the bank tomorrow, the seller will overnight me the title. I have an appointment at NJ MVC Wednesday afternoon to flip the title and get the plates. I'm flying out Thursday AM to get the car and was planning on driving back same day.
But it appears the Redsox are entertaining the Yankees Thursday night, and although I'm not a Yankee fan, I have never been to Fenway Park, and it's very hard to resist not checking off two bucket list items in one trip. So maybe I'll take in the game Thursday night, grab a cheap hotel room afterwards and start the trip home fresh on Friday. Let's see what the weather looks like. I'd rather not drive home in the rain.
Fenway Park is awesome. I support your decision. Tickets for a Yanks game are going to be... expensive. And no hotel in Boston is going to be cheap! Head out towards Framingham and there are a number of reasonably priced hotels. Oh, BTW, it's like $50 or more to park near Fenway for a Sox game.
I've only been to Fenway once, and I was quite young so I don't recall much of it. I hate the Yankees and don't really have much of an opinion of the Red Sox, but I will say as a casual fan, a Yankees, Red Sox game would be a lot of fun.
They range in price. I've paid $150 for more basic and I believe around $400 with bore scope (I might be off on the latter). Either is worth it before buying a car though
. You should definitely see Yankees vs Red Sox. Also get to see the monsters. Not just the green monster, Judge and Stanton are pretty big monsters. I saw the Yankees Astros last Thursday here in Houston, unfortunately my beloved Yankees lost. I have been extremely lucky this year, I saw the Yankees in May with my mom and brother in Tampa and last week in Houston. Yeah I know Im weird Yankees fan, cowboys fan and i live in Houston 😂. You should enjoy your trip. I was quoted $300 last year for an invasive ppi.
Usually billed as hourly time and typically a shop will quote 2/3 hours, around $300 in my experience in a metro area. (PPI's in San Francisco and Las Vegas.) Then if you want extra stuff like leakdown tests, borescoping, etc. that will be extra time added on and will be quoted based on availability. Only caveat is I wouldn't recommend to expect at a minute's notice for a mechanic to have 4 hours to put his tools down and do an invasive PPI... You might need to call around a bit for a last-minute appointment.
Totally agree with this. I would expect 2-3 hours charged at the standard shop rate plus the cost of an oil filter and oil to top off. However, I would expect the shop rate to be between $200 and $250 in Boston and expect around $500 for the PPI. When I got a PPI in Seattle in January it was around $450, and I had to schedule it over a week in advance, as they were very busy.
Also, definitely go to the Sox game. Fenway is lots of fun. Also, I can't remember the name, but there is a website that will show the view from your seat, so you don't get stuck sitting behind a pillar.
Got a ticket for Fenway. Section 164. Nice view of the Green Monster. I'm in row PP, which you can see in this 360* when it rotates to the rear.

Great to see you decided to make the drive. I just recently bought a new 996 and drove it back 1,600km. Loved every minute of it and will definitely be good memories in the future. I'm sure you remember this trip for some time and the trip to the red sox certainly the icing in the cake.
enjoy the game and i guess your drive tomorrow. Yesterday the Yankees were on steroids 16 runs 22 hits. Im hoping to get back home from the beach in time so I can get to watch the game on MLB. Then Friday Ill get to drive the 99 and Saturday the turbo to cars and coffee. Have a safe trip home
My first time spending more than a few seconds in a 911. In a word...speechless...Now I get it. I spent a few minutes washing MA, CT, NY and NJ off the car. Third best day of my life after the birth of my kids.
I know cabs are a little poo-poo'd by the purists, but that ride would not have nearly been as fun with a roof over my head.
Is it just me, or are 911s WRX magnets?
I had some concerns about the 19" wheels, but as you can see in the pics, my other car is a Wrangler. This car rides like a luxury sedan compared to that.
Nice looking car.
I've finally come around to liking lobster fork wheels on a 996.
Cab's aren't bad cars, just make certain to keep the drains clean and pray you never have to replace a rear window regulator.
I think you will now be addicted like thf rest of us.The more you drive these cars the more you will like them. Then the extra power want will come along and latter yet you may want to get another. Great looking car.
I believe I'm a gonner already.
I haven't formed an opinion yet on wheels. These are a little dinged up and I was thinking about getting them refurbished. I used to be in the autobody business and still have connections.
In the mean time I've been looking at other styles. Crazy the price of Porsche wheels!
Glad this one worked out for you and you are enjoying ownership so far. There is definitely something different about a Porsche. They do the race it Sunday, drive it to work on Monday thing better than any other car I have driven.
There are lots of great wheel options for the 997. I personally think 997 turbo look wheels look nice on all 997s. BBS also has lots of nice looking options. Nothing wrong with a cab either, especially if you don't track it, some people love that top down feeling. Enjoy your new ride while the weather is still good in Jersey!
Almico welcome and enjoy the ride
I’m not a fan of the lobsters but not that bad
but I have a set of freshly redone Porsche BBS my02 I think would look amazing on your car
I’m in Staten Island and we have a group that go out regularly and we have a few cabs we do get runs early Sunday
Either one looks a hell of a lot better the the lobster
my bbs comes with good tires and are ready to go
wheel choice is very difficult I ended up buying 6 sets so I have narrow it down to 3.
Please consider the weight of the wheels you are putting on. My favorite wheels are the 996.2 GT3 wheels. I knew they were heavy, everyone said so. But I didn't listen. And now I have them, it is very noticeable. I needed to adjust my suspension to get the crispness back. I'm thinking of upgrading my brakes because it takes alot more pedal force to stop. That said, the extra tire width is a huge step up in grip.
Good luck and congratulations. You are certainly already on the slippery slope that we are all on.

Almico Welcome to the forum! Also, the 99 with over 100k miles on it - welcome to the club. Drive it like you stole it... What the hell else you gonna do with it, take it to cars and coffee, LOL?
I like them a lot, but not in black. Then again I don't like all-black wheels. I like to have some other color on the wheel to separate it from the tire.
One of the things I love most about my Cab is that I can really hear that Porsche PSE sport exhaust. It sounds so good. I have a factory hard top as well and when it's on, even with windows open it's just not the same.
Speaking of hard top, I don't have one with this car. The tool is in the center console so it might have existed at some point. How does one go about acquiring one? I have access to a paint shop if necessary.
I know what you mean about the PSE. It really sounds great. On my car I get a nice burble at idle and initial takeoff. Then it quiets down a bit until about 4k. Then it really screams. Is that normal?
There's a 997 section you know...
Only sort of half kidding as there are differences in the cars and you might find better answers there. In this case though, it appears to be something shared with both 996 and 997 models. Yes the PSE goes quiet in a certain speed (NOT rev) range. Some European country, Austria I think, had a noise law in place, and Porsche met it by putting PSE in quiet mode within that speed range. You can defeat it, there are threads showing how. It involves opening up the PSE relay and cutting a resistor lead. Also you might want to look into a PSE control switch for the dash, if your car doesn't already have one. (My 2002 996 did not.) Makes it easier to keep peace in the neighborhood.
I'd check facebook marketplace, and you can look at the for sale section on this site. Although it drives me nuts on this site as people will post and then never update if its been sold. People will ask 2 years later if it's still available. I see a lot of 996 hardtops for sale, not so much 997. I am guessing that 997 Cabs did not come with the hard top like 996s did. I could be wrong though. I know that 986s did not come with them and they were about a $3000 option, so the 986 tops typically sell for at least double what 996 ones do.
Congrats. Be mindful when you hang around these forums that this is a tremendous resource but folks tend to come here when things go wrong. I find I enjoy my 2000 C2 much more now that I don't read too many HELP ME threads. Again-great resource and knowledgeable/helpful people when you need them.
