Get the track version even if you aren't tracking it because you can run the oil at overfill up to a quart.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Went to start my '02 Cab and got the dreaded oil fog of doom. The air oil separator is the only thing I have not replaced since I bought it six years ago. I wonder how difficult a job it is. Is it worse than the coolant tank replacement? I know my way around a wrench, been messing about with cars for about 50 years but really don't want to get involved with another wrestling match. Advice appreciated.
996.2 cab with tiptronic is the hardest.
996.2 cab with manual is still a wrestling match.
You have to get the car on jack stands/lift, remove both plenums, the plastic intake manifold on the driver side, and drop the engine as many inches as possible.
Go with the UAOS...search this forum for more info.
Anythng else is a huge mistake.
Having just done a ’99, I can 100% concur with Tex...PIA job, but doable. For me, both times, the hardest part was the plastic pipe clips, no room or leverage. Although that is sort of the overall theme of the whole job. A person with 46” arms from a 12 yr old girl, with kung-foo grip would be set for life. It would also be helpful to have 7 fingers on each hand.

I won't downplay this...replacing the AOS is a GIGANTIC PITA job. Allow 3 days time, be patient, keep track of things with pictures (vacuum lines). There are many threads on here about tips and tricks. Do a search. Since you will be using your left hand/arm most of the time, wrap your entire left arm in an ACE bandage first and wear work gloves. The left intake bolts are way back in there so your will be jamming your arm back in there. Good luck!
Yes, since you are going thru the headaches, replace it with the uaos. Get the track version even if you aren't tracking it because you can run the oil at overfill up to a quart. Why is this important? Because if you happen to overfill the oil a bit, you won't be in a panic.
LN sells a tool to help with those plastic pipes.

I picked one up AFTER having done my UAOS for the next 996 that I install a UAOS on.
I can't guarantee it helps, but I'm willing to try anything next time.
The only plastic pipe I had problems with was the one for that runs to the passenger side.
That pipe just didn't want to come off...or go back on either..
What I did was remove the bellows and clamps, undo the AOS bolts and then I pulled the whole thing up and into the engine bay. Made it much easier to get to those plastic pipe connectors. Still was a pain...you need super human hands to release that pinch.
Id be curious how it works. I didnt find the pinching the hard part, rather pushing it on or off far enough. Easy as pie on the bench...in place, well, not the same.
