Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

While you are in there you should definitely clean the drain holes too.

Suggestion
Same issue on both my 996s, I add a few of these in critical spaces (cabin filter and frunk) and change every 6 months.
Replace filters, refreshing the brakes, flushing fluids, etc

Rubber seals seem fine and no weird smells, but I'm spending the time (and a bit of money) replacing all the filters, refreshing the brakes, flushing fluids, etc.

Also, if using poison and you have pets be really careful.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

No clue. It looked like a nest made of lint and insulation. Oddly, our 958 had a similar situation blocking the drain holes. Cars from different homes with very similar conditions. Weird.
Yikes, I was actually thinking to do this on the 996 I just got. This might urge me to do it sooner.
Curious if you had any weird smells in the cabin at all or you only noticed it after changing?
Mouse nest!! Make sure you put "stuff round if you store for the winter! I have dealt with several of these. Engine filter also, exhaust pipes. Those buggers will nest anywhere!
You have to ask yourself where the mouse got that material. It looks like insulation from the car. IOW you may have damage elsewhere.
I once found about 1/4 lb. of acorns inside the airbox of my old Honda Fit. The air intake pulled from the space in between the LF fender liner and the engine compartment wall, and the bottom of that space was open. The squirrels thought it was a good place to store stuff.
Well, once she's dialed she'll be driven daily so hopefully I won't be attracting them.
I'm addressing several issues that are likely due to PO's neglect. He had the car for 12 years and drove it only 10,000 miles during his ownership. Rubber seals seem fine and no weird smells, but I'm spending the time (and a bit of money) replacing all the filters, refreshing the brakes, flushing fluids, etc.
The car doesn't have "super low" miles - it has 72.5k on the clock - but it hasn't been driven much in a long while. That's something I will remedy!
Yep that's\ a mouse nest ....Guaranteed he stole that insulation from the inside of your car ... They love that stuff ..... The first thing you need to do is bait the area where your car is parked. Eradicating mice and rats so they don't reproduce is easy and not difficult , you just have to stay on it otherwise another will come in and set up shop .
A combination of mouse / rat traps and bait stations I have found rid them quickly and from that point on just bi monthly maintenance of the traps and stations will be all you need. .
That's a nasty air filter. I am glad you caught it and hopefully the rodents didn't get to any of your electrical or leave you too much feces/urine to deal with. For what its worth I have found the most effective way to deal with rodents is a good cat, but obviously that isn't for everyone. The jaw type traps also work really well. I always try to put the traps/bait outside of the shop to try to keep the rodents from making there way into the shop if they haven't already. Also, if using poison and you have pets be really careful. It has a tendency to smell/taste good to them too and it is incredibly toxic and only one of the 2 major types of rat poison has an antidote. My parents dog recently got into some and was super lucky to survive after $10k+ in vet bills.
While you are in there you should definitely clean the drain holes too.
That is so true. I used to use poison but it's a bad idea. They start to feel sick and crawl to some hole somewhere that you can never find until the smell drives you crazy. Plus any bird of prey that eats them dies and then you have another reason there are too many mice and rats. That's a bummer. So, yes, poison is not the solution. Traps and prevention are the solution. And cats, being relentless, psychopathic serial killers, can help.
That's not chicken wire, that's hardware cloth.
If you've ever dealt with both, you'll know the difference.
Hardware cloth is much stronger and hurts like heck when you poke yourself with it.
Chicken wire is child's play compared to hardware cloth..
I had to completely contain my chicken coop (even from below) in hardware cloth to keep rats out.
The rats were able to chew through the chicken wire, but not the hardware cloth.
Rats are relentless in their pursuit for chicken feed.
They also disturbed my hens by trying to hide/live in the coop with them.
That hardware cloth will keep them out!
One more thing. I added something called mice dice. Plastic cubes with cotton inside. You soak them in peppermint oil and throw them on either side of the battery. That and the chicken wire frame seem to have mitigated the issue.
