The situation here is Confession through Projectionit was the commenter who would, if possible make it political.
Leading evidence: 'commenter who would, if possible make it political' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'commenter who would, if possible make it political' (1 discussions; 0 report identifying it and 1 suggest it). No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.
Source reports, not a diagnosis or a success probability. Counts refer to discussions and can overlap.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

The
California Truckers Association is warning
that 70,000 independent truck owner-operators will be taken off the roads of California later this week as a draconian new law, AB-5 kicks in: The new law passed and signed by the Californian legislature, essentially outlaws independent contractors from operating transport trucks in the state of California.
Not only do transport trucks carry food and consumer goods in and out of California, they routinely distribute ocean freight containers from California ports to inland destinations. The containers move from ships to trucks, and those trucks take them to retail distribution hubs or domestic manufacturers for offloading....then add that
diesel engine oil additives are in short supply
and expected to run out in about 7 weeks. So now under Californias new AB5 law, the logistics challenge of receiving goods carried by road could become a massive nightmare. Added to this is the fact that
Union Pacific railroad is already slashing the number of rail cars
it carries for existing customers (such as CF Industries, a fertilizer manufacturer), which means railroads have no excess capacity to pick up the slack from trucking.
Americas logistics infrastructure........another round of finger-pointing..
..the scenario for the second half of 2022 doesnt look very rosy at this point.
Someone explain to me what is political about that post? Also, explain what it doesn't have to do with our technical discussions on being able to fulfill on parts that we discuss daily?
Just asking...🙂
I don't disagree that it has some tangential connection to parts availability, BUT....
(1) Labeling the law as "draconian" is a political statement; not a fact;
(2) "
The new law passed and signed by the Californian legislature"....(a) who else would pass a state law other than the legislature, including this is just a subtle Political jab IMO....(b) legislatures don't sign laws, that would be the Gov's job. Makes me question whether the author has an political axe or is just passing on "supply chain" concerns.
Fair enough. I was debating the validity with regards to it being in the technical forum of the 996, since it does affect every car out there in the market (and other products too) and would have been more well suited for a general forum. But yes, it is good info to know that the supply chain crises is only going to worsen, and since I've actually read the article on the linked website, I tend to be in agreement with the analyses. However, that's why I also said politics, because the linked website, although the article is valid, clearly tends to be of political nature and I'm just in general a supporter of politically-independent news & media outlets. If such thing still exists.
When two of the links are from a far right conspiracy theory website I don't believe it should be in this forum. There is the off-topic thread for these kind of things.
I kind of want it to be a stick but I feel like most people don't look there anyway. Off-topic thread for your viewing and posting pleasure -

Guys, thank you for your points of reference. Agreed, the majority of us don't want to hear any political whining. We hear enough of that from other sources.
My takeaway wasn't political but more so economic related as it pertains to one more issue to deal with regarding supply chain disruptions and lack of inventory availability which is hammering all industries, including the 996 World.
Not sure I follow.
I appreciate the OP's insights, and I'm glad he included his sources. I thought you couldn't identify what was political in the post so I was instructing you to follow the links which I consider to be part of the post.
Personally I don't care one way or the other people can discuss whatever they want wherever they want.
Since I had just answered an E-mail from FSI on an update of when I could deliver a order of UAOS-E kits to them by August, and I am am waiting on an order of Stainless Steel Optical Sensors that come from the UK, my first thought was I hope those Sensors are coming by AIR freight to the US Distributor and not by ROAD ..
Supply issues are a bitch...
I'm good. You guys and all this specialty stuff I'm trying to get Apple to ship me a couple of computers. I've had upgraded Macbook Pros on order since new year and they just told me not to expect them till September. I asked them for Studios and they laughed. I can get off-the-shelf ones but have you guys ever heard a 3D animator whine?
AB5 is the gig worker law, went into effect 2 years ago. There were unintended consequences, among them that independent truckers would be forced to become employees of TruckingCo X. The Supes just kicked their plea for a review off the docket. So, remove the politics (as much as can be done) and this looks to me like a real problem. Okay, you say, it's CA, let them stew in their juices. Except CA has a huge coastline and lots of ports, and those ports rely on trucks to haul their offloads to <somewhere>. Not sure how much it will affect us Europhiles but it inevitably will somewhat.
It was tough to find an article about this that wasn't political. But I found one, from a trucking website.

I found it informative.
It does seem like a particularly awful time to be making the shipping industry jump through hoops.

By the very nature of his comment, your unpolitical post is politicized welcome to the new.
I agree. If this just became effective, now there are going to be less trucks available to move cars. There is a few websites that specialized in quoting you a rate but what they do is put the contract out there to the independent truckers. Like everything else its probably going to cost even more to get a car deliver to your door from California. In May I was quoted almost $2000 in an open carrier to bring my turbo from riverside, California to Katy Texas. So I went there by plane and drove the car hone 1698 miles, all in for $700. Now if anyone buys a car from Cali is even going to make more sense to fly and drive.
To summarize for those that didn't read it, and who may only follow politically leaning sites which have simple black/white positions on everything, and which claim that the sky is falling (fear sells!) because the "other" party is in power somewhere, I offer the following. (BTW, most topics are actually complicated, with pros and cons on both sides. Often educated and nuanced thought is required.)
From Pulpo's link (Thanks!), I've learned that:
- nature of the operation could well satisfy the business-to-business exception to AB 5
- have already anticipated a negative outcome to the CTA's suit and "made certain that their business practices satisfy the business-to-business exemption, and their independent contractor agreement is up-to-date. They are moving forward with confidence."
- quoted from an Owner-Operator, "We dont think well be affected by it," Gonzalez said. It's "no big deal for us."
So: Yes, definitely jumping through some hoops, which may effect some of the less-organized / less-pro-active Owner-Operators. No, not the end of trucking in California.
Exactly. The law is actually to protect from businesses being able take advantage of people by classifying them as contractors when they aren't. Which is a good thing in the end. That being said the issue of parts availability isn't solely based on trucks. I have a buddy who works in parts/manufacturing and much of the delay is exacerbated by manufacturing the actual product. Many Asian countries are/were still under strict covid protocols and lock downs. One of my buddies contacts just got out of lockdown two weeks ago in a region of China.
