Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

I know it's technically splitting hairs, but I don't consider the chamfer an upgrade just an updated part that fixes an issue on early 997 987 but can also be used on 996 with no ill effects and has superseeded the 996 by-pass valve..
Leading evidence: 'Use on 996' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'only thing changed by porsche' (1 discussions; 0 report identifying it and 1 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Replace but thats about all this is doing' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

Anyone would have had to be working closely with Porsche during this time to know WHY the chamfer was done , and it was the only thing changed by Porsche ..

If your car does not read 5 bar when cold or at high rpm yours might be worn and need to be replaced but thats about all this is doing.

My experience and results replacing the relief spring and plunger with the updated parts is documented in the oil pressure thread.

Suggestion
Replacing the spring with a new one I do not consider an upgrade either just replacing a tired spring with a new one and if there was a difference in tired vs new it will effect the pressure the by-pass valve operates at.

These are separate views of the same evidence. Frequency alone does not establish a fix, and these counts must not be added together.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Mark, depending on if you get a response, you may want to consider posting this on zbombs oil pressure stability thread. Bet many would like to know if it helps in some way.
I recall this being recommended as a service item as the engine raises. It's said to help stabilize oil pressure at low rpm's I believe. I've done this in the spring with the upgraded 997 unit.
The pressure relief spring just opens a port so at over 5bar it doesnt overpressure the system. This doesnt effect the oil pressure system unless its at full pressure. If your car does not read 5 bar when cold or at high rpm yours might be worn and need to be replaced but thats about all this is doing.
Like so many things Porsche, this is an upgraded part. I believe it has to do with a chamfered end and stronger spring. The chamfered end is to prevent it from hanging up in the bore. I have not changed this out on my car. I have no problems so I'm leaving it alone (for now).
My experience and results replacing the relief spring and plunger with the updated parts is documented in the oil pressure thread. Not much though as it did not make a meaningful difference.
That "updated by-pass valve" was only done to stop a squealing noise on 997 and 987.
The chamfer is the only difference.
The 997/987 engines had slightly different oil activated vario-cam system and when cold some early engines would make this squealing nose at low RPM before they warmed up. We fixed several by just grinding the small chamfer in the "996 type valve" , then Porsche updated the valve to "997" part number "with" the chamfer...
Anyone who thinks it's an upgrade doesn't know why it was actually produced..I hate to bust anyones bubble, and it is a cheap part and certainly doesn't hurt to install it. I'm just trying to keep "internet folklore" at a minimum on technical items..
That's because there has been a lot more people "talking m96" and a lot less people "doing m96"...
The early 997 987 engines had the same by-pass valve as the 996, as well as the same spring, oil pump, and oil pump housing.
Anyone would have had to be working closely with Porsche during this time to know WHY the chamfer was done , and it was the only thing changed by Porsche ..

BTW, Jake uses the word "updated" and not "upgraded" in this example..
Replacing the spring with a new one I do not consider an upgrade either just replacing a tired spring with a new one and if there was a difference in tired vs new it will effect the pressure the by-pass valve operates at. Shimming the spring would be considered a modification and would have an intended result in mind..
If I'm being too technical just let me know, sometimes I'm guilty of TMI...
