I changed both D2S bulbs last year to new Jahn (OEM) bulbs and the difference was amazing, the old bulbs just barely lit anything up and the new are much better.

Below that projector, there is another H7 bulb that is used for flash and for high beam ( when you have the high beam connected, you will have both bulbs on, the HID and the H7)

996.1 litronics uses a h7 bulb for the secondary high beam, there is nothing on the market to swap that bulb to a HID.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

For a 996.2 / 2003 car: Yes - I did use the search function. And yes, I watched the FCP Euro video on replacement. What I couldn't get an undeniably clear answer on is if the high-beam and low-beam lamps are the same on the HID unit. In the video, they reference that the bulbs for both beams are identical in the case of the Halogen unit. They make no reference to the HID unit. Bonus question(s): Is it a) possible and b) good or bad (pros and cons) to use different D2S bulbs in there (i.e. in the case they are identical). Thinking of doing Osram Night Breakers D2S in the low beam and Philips XV2s D2S in the high beam. Any takers? Thanks so much!

POST 2Original post

996.1 litronics uses a h7 bulb for the secondary high beam, there is nothing on the market to swap that bulb to a HID. There are options to swap to a h7 LED replacement, but if you're interested in better high beam performance the money would be better spent on a retrofitlabs bi-xenon projector replacement (porscheretrofits.com is a forum member and US supplier if you are in the states). I put osram cool blue h7s in for my highs to try and better match the color profile without swapping to LEDs.

Thank you for the quick response! Do you know if there are any differences to the 996.2 Litronics?

POST 4Original post

I have 996.2 Litronics and they are the same bulbs. D2S main beam and H7 auxiliary high beam. I changed both D2S bulbs last year to new Jahn (OEM) bulbs and the difference was amazing, the old bulbs just barely lit anything up and the new are much better.

There is only one HID bulb (D2S) Maybe what has confused you is the fact that in the 996.2, the HID projector, is used for both, low and high beam (there is a diaphragm in front of the HID bulb) that opens for high beam and closes for low beam). Below that projector, there is another H7 bulb that is used for flash and for high beam ( when you have the high beam connected, you will have both bulbs on, the HID and the H7)

Thank you. Makes perfect sense. To summarize: High beam / Low beam: One single D2S bulb for both Auxiliary high beam: H7 bulb thank you!

POST 7Original post

FWIW, the single D2s with the shutter is usually referred to as a "Bi-Zenon" bulb in catalogs, the non shutter is simply a Zenon. The shutter is magnetically activated in most installs. Hid's work in very few standard fixtures, they normally require specific reflectors and lenses to avoid being harsh on the other oncoming drivers.

POST 8 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

FYI - I just changed out the bulbs (Low/high beam and the auxiliary H11 high beam bulb). I went with Osram Night Breaker D2S and Sylvania H11 SilverStar Ultra. In addition, I had a local detailing shop do a headlight restoration treatment on the outer housing. The difference is, pun intended, night and day. This is such great light distribution and intensity, night time driving is a bliss. The 996 now has better light than my BMW X7 with the laser lights.
