I've ran a fuel injected car out of gas before and had to purge the air out of the fuel rail to get it to run.

Suggestion
A real check of fuel flow would include a pressure check since a pump can look like its good but the pressure available isn't good enough for the injectors to operate correcly.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Confirmed voltage at pump but of course pump didn't work.
Hi guys,help !!!!!
i ran out of fuel yesterday while travelling up hill at speed.
I went to the petrol station and filled a can, poured it in but still no start.
I had to be recovered.
When i arrived home i charged the battery over night and added another 15 litres of petrol.
It still wont start !!
It is a 1998 model 996 tiptronic carrera .
Please help guys,i'm totally distraught and fed up with walking already.
Many thanks paul
Could be running that low you got the water your island is known for into the lines. Injectors will gag and plug up injectors with water and gum. If it was old petrol stored over the winter then out of gas with the engine hot the stuff can bake a laquer inside your injectors. Could of helped a little to use some injector cleaner and water preventor on the first shot of gas you put in.
Can someone else crank the car while you test for fuel showing up at the exhaust tips? Might not be all the injector clogged or all of them clogged so bad they are stopped from passing fuel. Get some injector or fuel system cleaner in there.
The fuel pumps need fuel to keep them cool to prevent them from burning out. I hope it isn't the pump failed. Anyway good luck dealing with it.
thanks guys,i don't think its old fuel {clogging} problem.
i'm a bit concerned about the burning smell i keep getting from the starter i think so i'm reluctant to keep trying it.
it does all point towards a fuel problem but i dont know where to start.
First off starers shouldn't be canked for more than 5 seconds max and let it cool down after a few trys. No keeping it cranking till power seems to drop. This goes for any vehicle with a starter and even mil specs military diesels. DON'T SMOKE THE STARTER
A shop can flush your system. But a good injector cleaning can really only be done on a machine and there are different machines for doing it with the fanciest costly. I'd check the fuel pump first. Try reading the manual and take a shot at watching for fuel flow with the line in the back disconnected. A real check of fuel flow would include a pressure check since a pump can look like its good but the pressure available isn't good enough for the injectors to operate correcly. While back there there might be a good chance to see what sort of stuff is floating in the fuel rail.
Manuals are posted online in the UK for the car.
yes thanks ivan.it sounds a bit extreme doesn't it ?
do you think its worth stripping out the battery and checking pump lines for burns ?
how common is this problem ?
the lines burn because fuel is what cools them... no fuel, no cooling.
I would rate this very high as the "possible reason"
you need to check fuel pressure downline of the pump....IMO
If you crank the engine and it doesn't make any sounds like it wants to fire and you do not smell any gasoline smell, the fuel pump becomes suspect.
You should hear teh fuel pump come on when you turn on the key.
Check the relay in the relay panel. It is #13 IIRC. (The relay with the pink lettering.) If the relay bad sometimes tapping on it with a finger while you work the key can temporarily revive the relay.
My 02 Boxster stalled the other day. Cranked just fine. No gas smell. I checked relay. No luck. Ordered a new one and at dealer Porsche tech loaned me a relay bridge which I tried and the fuel pump still refused to run.
Had the car flat bedded into to dealer service department and the tech confirmed the fuel pump was the culprit. This involved removing cowl covers and battery and battery box and access panel over fuel pump to expose fuel pump wiring and top of fuel tank. He then hooked up shop 12V power to the battery cables cause car's battery removed. Confirmed voltage at pump but of course pump didn't work. He replaced the fuel pump and all is well.
You need to check there is battery voltage at the fuel pump wiring when you turn key to on/start. If there is then fuel pump bad.
Oh, fuel pump lasted over 231K mles. Tech told me fuel tank bottom real clean and no water.
Another possibility: I've seen an engine shut off like throwing a switch by water in gas line coming into contact with inline fuel filter which just grabs the water and then won't pass fuel. I managed to remove the filter and blow the water out. In your car's case the fuel filter will probably have to be replaced.
If there isn't then perhaps the crankshaft position sensor is bad and Ecu will not turn on fuel pump cause it can't know position of crankshaft and does not when to trigger injectors (or spark).
Sincerely,
Macster.
If you typically run the tank past 1/4 my bet is always the fuel pump burned out since the pump depends on fuel to cool it.
If you park the car for winter and refuel at around half a tank all the time I'd lean more towards contamination of fuel.
If the fuel is old say 6 months or so then I'd say fuel is bad and the lines need flushing.
If you stored the car with out fuel preservatives and not topped off I'd bet on water in the tank and bad fuel.
If you just bought the car I'd bet on all of the above
I'd change the battery out while in there if its near its last half year.
I've ran a fuel injected car out of gas before and had to purge the air out of the fuel rail to get it to run. Was simple to do at the time (shrader valve at the service port on the fuel rail) but that was not on a 911.
Any way, if it has one (not shure) it would be a quick and free thing to check. Just turn the key to "run" once or twice to prime the system and push in the valve, it should look like a tire valve under a cap.
Good luck, Brian
edit. do these cars have a returnless fuel system?
