Is the power steering fluid supposed to be checked cold or hot?

Check the grease boots on the ball joint at the end of the LCA (coffin arm) they have a tendency to crack or tear which leads to no grease/creaking/groaning etc

It would take less time to check the power steering fluid level than to post here.

If its hot where you are, after the car is nice and hot, you can set the AC to Low temp and medium to high speed blower, and the high speed radiator fans might come on.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hi,
I just was curious if anyone else had a loud groaning like sound coming from what appears to be the front after a long drive?
It happens the second I switch off the ignition.
Not sure if this is normal or not.
Thank you
I’m going to take it for a drive later today, can record it then and post it.
I bought the car last year so I haven’t put too many miles myself.
It is a tiptronic at 160 000 km (100 000 miles). The service history doesn’t show any work done to the diff. I went to a mechanic to fix the transmission recently. The problem related to the transmission is fixed but after he took it for a 20 min drive he came back saying that the power steering fluid should be checked at some point too. Not sure if this might be related or irrelevant.
Well typical, you drive it for 2 hours and the noise isn't there.
I did check the power steering fluid this morning while it was cold. The dipstick shows it is halfway... and it is still green and clear so I'll top it up sometime this week.
I'll try to record the noise/groan when I hear it and post it.

Is the power steering fluid supposed to be checked cold or hot? Some cars require when hot but I don't know about the 996 .... so maybe check before topping off.
Be careful when topping up the power steering fluid, it's really easy to overfill. There are hot and cold markings on the dipstick and as usual, you need to be on a level surface.
Please correct me if this is wrong. You stop the car, turn off the key, and hear a loud groan from the front of the car. Is that correct? If so check your radiator fans.
Agree, I'll bet if you got out of the car and listened to the front - with the car running - you would also hear the groan. You probably just can't hear it over the glorious sound of the almighty M96. Check all the spinning/pumping components of the front end with the car running. I'll bet you hear it and find it.
Yes, thats correct. I did some more reading and it could be the radiator fans as you say. Next time I hear it I guess Ill try to go out quickly and check which side it is coming from. Hopefully it is only one fan and not 2 one fan seems to be around 400 USD. :/
If you have a Durametric, or can make friends with someone with a pro version, you can activate the fans both stage one and stage two with it. Also, I am sure if you wanted to you could easily adapt a none Porsche fan with no ill effects. There are a lot of high quality electric fans available out there of all shapes, sizes, and orientations. Just be sure that the flow direction is correct. (I am pretty sure they are pull)
If its hot where you are, after the car is nice and hot, you can set the AC to Low temp and medium to high speed blower, and the high speed radiator fans might come on. For sure the fan will operate at low speed and you might hear the groan if its the fans. Try to get someone else to listen for it.
