Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

11 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

My apology if this is not obvious. Quick question, based on this picture, is this a single or double row?

POST 2Original post

That is a savaged dual-row bearing. See the two grooves? Those are the "rows" of bearings.

Set up a little shop in Cap Hill and you'd be set.

POST 7Original post

thats funny - i edited my post butt you grabbed it just in time. could be some serious cash

POST 8 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Yeah paid $499, advertised as 'original Porsche, in almost new condition, hardly used, should last another 1 million miles' Nope J/K Apparently this was an LN bearing from a 2002 C4S who'd had the bearing replaced at 98,000kms (I'm in NZ), and it has just exploded 35000 kms later. I thought all C4S will be on single-row? Also can we tell from the picture whether it's an LN bearing? The owner might have been duped by the shop thinking he'd paid for LN products. Obviously the rest of the 'less-informed' starting to offer their opinions in the club's facebook page. Understandable as most of them are air-cooled worshipers. Hence I came here first to get feedback on what I'm looking at from the 'more-informed'.

POST 9Original post

It fooled you. Thats a single row, what appears to be a second row deep ball bearing groove is actually extreme wear from the bearing failure. This is where the ID of the shafts creates the damage. I need to see the face of the flange to prove that its an LN unit.

POST 10 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Wow, thanks Jake. That would have been shedding metal (and ceramic?) materials like crazy then. Quite possibly the owner doesn't have magnetic plug. The owner has been posting to the porsche club's fb page, I'll try to get him in here to talk about his experience. That was his picture replying to my questions.

I wondered. The dual groves definitely make it look like it, but the flange looked too thick above the seal. I didn't have mine handy to compare with though. Having mine in hand now I see that the flange pictured is indeed thicker both above and below the seal. At least compared to my factory dual's flange.
