Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Leading evidence: 'Check starter fuse' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Check starter fuse' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

So disconnected batter cables and charged battery.

Thinking the computer didn't reset or something I disconnected battery again for about 90 seconds and reconnected again.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Car has set this winter and went to start it and nothing, battery completely dead.
So disconnected batter cables and charged battery. Reconnected cables.
Now when I go to start it, the starter won't engage. All the lights and power to the dash works. I can see the draw on the lights when I turn the key on to start but the starter doesn't engage. Thinking the computer didn't reset or something I disconnected battery again for about 90 seconds and reconnected again. Checked the starter fuse but it's good. I know they don't like to set with a dead battery for a extended period of time. Everything else electrical appears to be working.
It's a 02 996 with 87,xxx miles.
Any ideas before it's towed to my indie???
Thanks in advance for any help!
Check the voltage on the battery. Mine would power all the lights on but wouldn't start the car as it was only putting out 10 volts as on cell was dead. I could however start the car with the charger on the battery. Mine is a 2011 so the battery was 5 years old. Replaced it with interstate and all is good.
Voltage itself is not sufficient. It needs huge current to start the engine.
You need to load test the battery. Can you bring the battery to an auto parts store for them to test it?
Voltage is one thing. It will power the lights and so on. Amps are what is required to kick the starter over. Bet you have no amps, well not enough to turn the starter. Buy a new battery and get on with it!
Any clicking when the key is turned to the start position?
What does the dash voltmeter read when the key is in the on position? When in the start position?
Maybe the ign switch. I've heard they cause trouble but not familiar with this failure mode. If it were me, I'd hunt down the ignition relay and swap it. If that doesn't do it, find the starter solenoid and jump the hot lead to energize it. But - that's me.
I still think it's the ignition switch but the battery is easier to swap out so I'll do that first. I'll update when resolved. Thanks to everyone for the input.
if you have a voltmeter, measure the voltage before, during, and after trying to crank the motor. If there is a significant drop in voltage while trying to crank the battery is dead. If there is no change then it could be the switch. Should be pretty easy to resolve.
Agree. Alternatively, you should notice your dome light goes dim when there's current drawn when cranking. I thought OP said he noticed the draw but on a later post he also said nothing happened at all when cranking so not sure. Two very different cases.
I drive my Porsche Every week..... Went to start it today and all my lights flashed repeatedly, would not turn over.... went an purchased a new battery... I will keep you updated when I get home. Crazy thing is that my battery indicator in my car said my battery was in good condition...oh well. We will see if the new $215 battery is the answer
The voltage meter in the dash is not a battery indicator nor does it report good, bad, or any other indication. At best it is an indicator of voltage of the battery and/or the charging system. One shouldnt confuse the voltage of a battery with its health; the two are only slightly related.
