Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

So, the reason the metal pin bends is because the little oil filled gear that is supposed to slow down the spring action of the door has broken and fallen off (the little plastic tabs that hold the gear in place break off).

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

9 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

0 evidence records excluded for query context · 0 excluded by outcome qualification · 0 adjusted by outcome qualification.

0 acknowledgements have no verified action link; they do not establish a repair result.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Got my replacement ash tray delete. But in testing it, it doesn't match. It's close, but it doesn't have the same sparkly color my 1999 C2 has. This will drive me nuts and I think my only option is to fix the lid on the ashtray. If you were me, would you deal with it? Or would you notice it every time you got in the car and slowly go insane? I guess I'm going to start searching "ash tray lid won't stay closed"

POST 2Original post

Your early 996 has the granite grey trim finish. Perhaps they sent or you ordered the black version?

POST 3Original post

Yup, you need granite grey. Been a long while since I did ours, but IIRC the current coin trays are painted GG, whereas the ash trays appeared molded through. No practical difference, but may scratch easier.

POST 4Original post

Fixing the ash tray is a easy fix, take the detent pin out where the gears are on the side and straighten the pin and put back together. the pin gets bent and need to be straight.

I guess I didnt know my console color and ordered the wrong thing ... I just found the granite grey version, its $100. aye yi yi Not sure $100 is worth it! Guess I'll be going this route now. I had tried to remove that pin, but couldn't get it out. I will try with more gusto tomorrow. Thank you.

So, the reason the metal pin bends is because the little oil filled gear that is supposed to slow down the spring action of the door has broken and fallen off (the little plastic tabs that hold the gear in place break off). In the 8 years Ive owned my car, I havent been able to find a source for these oil filled gears, even though they have the name of the manufacturer on them, and you can find photos of them on the internet🤬

I finally got around to trying that. Took it all apart, the pin was fine. It's the little piece of plastic that holds the pin to keep it closed, has broken off. So I just took the spring out and now open it manually.. 🤷🏻‍♂️
