Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Self-advertisement... Sorry. If you or anyone you know is looking for a sorted, low mileage, original paint, 996, in Mirage Metallic (4 cans on Rennbow) with all the preventative maintenance done including the IMSB LN Solution, Skip's UAOS, new coolant tank, water pump, coils, plug sleeves, tranny service, etc, etc, then look at PCarMarket. My gorgeous 2000 996 Cabriolet with Tip is on the auction block and it ends at 2:00 p.m. today. This car has the infamous IMS and AOS issues permanently addressed along with a ton of preventative maintenance so you won't be shelling out another $10K to a shop after you buy the car. Check it out.

POST 2Original post

How disappointing for you, but perhaps it just wasn't the right day, or that other economic factor are at play. The car looks awesome and very well cared for. The lack of bids might indicate that not all buyers are educated, or just don't care about all your expenditures, which is odd. I'm not interested in selling mine, but like you, I've spent a lot of money on my 6sp mt coupe in Meridian metallic, trying to make it as durable as possible. You auction results aren't very reassuring for me that I would get even some off my investment back, which is disappointing. Or maybe it's was just a bad day. Good luck with the sale!

POST 3Original post

I hope you had some post auction interest. TIPs always take a nick on price and require the right buyer. I thought with the IMSB done the bidding might get to $25K.

POST 4 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Same here! Not any old IMS, but the LN Solution and Skips UAOS - both are expensive upgrades & permanent fixes. With all the documented maintenance its a tough pill to swallow, even in a softened market. The reserve was $26K which is not high for a low mileage car in great condition (even a Cab/TIP). PCar wanted me to lower the reserve to $20K so it would sell. I didnt hire them to play Used Car Salesman suggesting I take a low ball offer so they can get a commission. I had a dealership offer $25K (wholesale $$) so this result is a little baffling. If I do it again itll be on BAT (more exposure) and not until Spring. In the meantime guess Ill be dropping the top & driving through the Fall Season. Thanks again for the support- it is appreciated.

POST 5Original post

Quotes source post: 19009013

Expect BaT to lowball you too. They're notorious for pushing people to set low reserves. At the same time I'm hearing more and more about BaT and other auction sites reaching out to people who post For Sale ads and trying to get them to list the car in an auction. Those two pieces of information don't seem to fit together.

POST 6 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thats what PCar did and at first I was hesitant, but for $99 I figured WTH even with a low reserve I thought it would go a bit higher AFTER hitting reserve. Later when that doesnt happen they push you to drop your reserve to whatever the bid is. No thanks! These auction sites are no better than a Used Car Dealership, except they get more exposure to possible buyers. You still do all the work, vehicle prep, pics, videos, etc. Ill drive her this Fall with the top down & consider myself lucky to have such an amazing car, regardless of what the market thinks its worth.

POST 7Original post

I had a similar result with my 02 996 C2 Coupe - very well sorted, including an engine rebuild with nickies, UAOS, IMS Solution, and a whole bunch of new stuff. I listed it on BAT and it went live over Memorial Day weekend. Mine did not meet the low reserve and I ended up making a deal with the highest bidder. I found the audience on BAT that was watching my auction could have cared less about all the technical info I provided. People were making negative comments on the odometer mileage (119k) and completely ignoring the fact that the engine had about 10k miles on it, tranny 1k miles, blah blah blah (or is it yada yada yada). BAT did want me to sell with no reserve, but I declined. Once I declined they had no issues and were quite responsive and offered ways of listing features and pics. Yes, it was a lot of prep work, but IMHO it was still easier that way than trying to sell privately. In the end I sold the car without having to put up with no shows, people pretending to be interested just to take a test drive, and all the rest of the crap that goes with trying to sell anything these days (including the prince from an exotic land who wants to pay me more than asking price). I did sell it for a few grand less than what I thought it deserved, but, what the seller thinks and what the buyer will pay are usually at opposite sides.

POST 8Original post

Your 996 looks great, has lowish mileage and is up to date on maintenance. But its a tip cab that has been modified to your taste. Stock manual cabs on BAT with similar mileage are selling in the low to mid 20s. Id take the dealerships offer of 25K

POST 9Original post

It's wild that TIPs take the price hit. At boxstoberfest I was SHOCKED at the number of TIPS on the 986/996/987/997 contingent. They are by all evidence very popular.

POST 10 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Yeah, I know the Cab / Tip cars demand less, but holy crap Batman even the 996 coupe takes a beating. Just baffling how the 996, much less the Cab / TIP which costs significantly more, is so underrated & undervalued still. Thanks for the frank & honest feedback. In the end, its better to just drive them 😎

POST 11Original post

Quotes source post: 19009181

It's not that baffling why the 996 is not and will not ever be valued like other 911s. For one, cachet and exclusivity. There's a lot more 996s and they're not that special. I'm grateful for that, or I would never have been able to buy and drive any 911. If by some chance prices go up, (I'm not holding my breath) great. But at the end of the day it's an old car, and no matter how much preventative maintenance and upgrades we do to them, the engines need a rebuild at some point. I'm not sure if I can afford that now, so I relish every mile in Savannah even more. If she dies, I might have to park it or sell it. Then I'll be driving a cheap toaster like most folks and I'll be thankful for even that. Fool me once etc etc. No more porsches if Savannah lets me down. (I hope she's listening). Anyway, for now, I think you have the right idea, to put the top down and drive it like you stole it. 😎

POST 12Original post

Just because it hits the reserve, it doesnt mean you have to follow thru and sell it. Its just a lead not a contract. Just tell the seller sometime between the end of auction and now the car got damaged. And no Im not a lawyer.

Good thing! All around - bad advice.

POST 14Original post

Quotes source post: 19020387

Buyers back out all the time and sometimes with no $$ consequences, why not sellers? Morality aside, please explain why my advice is bad.

POST 15Original post

I think mike has a point if the seller doesn’t like the price he can say he was pressured while suffering from coronavirus I hope the seller drives it till the wheels fall off

POST 16Original post

Quotes source post: 19020490

When you set a reserve on a car, there is an obligation to sell if the reserve is met. You can be forced to follow through on the deal if the buyer or auction house chooses to pursue the matter and enforce the contract. Likewise, when you make a winning bid on these sites there is an obligation to follow through. While there may not be a financial consequence, you are no longer permitted to bid (or sell) if you fail to consummate the purchase. And suggesting that you fabricate a story that the car was damaged to avoid a sale will likewise have consequences. There is no "morality aside" in RL.

POST 17Original post

Quotes source post: 19020784

Thanks for your thoughtful response. The fabrication of the story is where it gets sticky. Prove it isn't "damaged" and it doesn't represent it's auction condition as listed. And no you can't see my car to disprove this Define sex

POST 18Original post

People who renege on agreed selling prices put poison into the public well. They make the world a lesser place. One gives one's word; one keeps one's word. Why is this even being discussed.

POST 19Original post

So, in summary... Don't keep your word. Pull out of a deal on public auction site claiming the car was damaged. (Good luck getting more for it at a later date.) Openly discuss claiming the car was damaged as a strategy to pull out of a deal on a public forum.

POST 20Original post

A little story about scummy BAT sellers with reputations like gold.....911R About 6 months ago, I flew to Wisconsin after winning a former BAT car with check in hand, the car had 10 more miles than it did since it left BAT so I was sure it was in the same condition as when the BAT pics were taken. I fly into Milwaukee, rent a car and drive to The Throttle Stop, I get there and the manager says, most people just ship the car and don't actually stop in (first red flag) He shows me around the showroom with million dollar cars then takes me to the motorcylce repair shop where my car was (2nd red flag) I looked at the car for 30 seconds and was like, WTF am I looking at here. I brought up all the pics from the seller and from 911R and the car was so poorly mis represented I couldn't believe my eyes. Told him he should be ashamed of himself and booked a flight home. But back to our talking point. Auction buyers can back out and no one cares. You would probably even say, man, the car must not have been as advertised, BLAMING THE CAR, not the buyer. I love it when a car gets relisted and BAT says, it's being relisted not due to it's condition but due to a bad buyer who has now been banned, lol. Yeah right, now the car is stigmatized. All I'm saying is it's about time the seller has the same rights as the buyer. Don't like the price, don't sell it. Not a damn thing anyone can do about it. Real auctions hold your title.

POST 21Original post

Quotes source post: 19024370

Wow, quite a tale and you're right, 911R has a good rep. Did the car get relisted?
