Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Leading evidence: 'Check cracks as a minimum' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'u dont know where its gonna start' (1 discussions; 0 report identifying it and 1 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Check alignment' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

Coverage and how to read this overview
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

My son and I are driving over a speed bump at 15mph last night when a “snap” and “thunk” happen at passenger front. Because the 996 steering is so Princess Pea sensitive, I immediately notice the right front is moving pretty independently regarding my steering inputs. I then put my test pilot helmet on, proceeded to stop and looked under the car. You can imagine my surprise when I saw what I intuitively knew was not the IMS bearing or AOS failing. Thank you RL! Instead I ‘only’ had a snapped, really expensive wishbone.

Driver side OEM TRW GT3 arm and end. Litronic 1mm shim. I provided the shop with a plethora of shim sizes to easily attain a 7 or 8mm shimmed gap for ~ -1.0 front camber.

Anyone else wonder where the shims are?
Well your shop is a complete bunch of idiots and they assembled your arms wrong and they owe u a lot of money and a big applology.
The round spacers go under the nut to space off the nut to make it easier to tighten. The shims and only the shims go between the 2 parts of the arm to make a solid block. Basically they made a bending moment in the arm. Glad u didnt wreck your car.
Fyi, Demonspeed can supply just the studs, washers and the nuts if u can slavage the 2 sides. Also, I would replace the studs on any of the arms assembled incorrectly.
I'm reading this thread, looking at that picture, and just shaking my head. How can anyone think that's how the part was designed to work? Shake. My. Head.
U dont know what u dont know. If u r not used to working on porsches u r gonna make mistakes. This is why most use experience indy's or race shops but even they make mistakes. I saw a 718 mr thats was speed shop maintained at the track with a front brake pad metal side against the rotor.
This is why i do all my own work.
But both of those are mechanical 101 kind of things. The mating surfaces on a two-piece LCA being the size of a dime? That should set off alarms in the head of anyone with mechanical aptitude.
This is true, we can. The studs are pretty specific for the threaded and unthreaded sides. The bending because of using the sleeves as shims probably caused the stud failure,
We also have the shims that we can provide. Here is a link to the shims, but you would need to call in for an order that would include the studs sleeves and nuts.

Thanks

I get .3-.4* per every mm of shim. The issue is u dont know where its gonna start so if u get arms grab a couple 6mm and a bunch of 2 and 1mm shims. In the front u may be as much as 15mm of shim. It all depends kn how much camber u want.
I'm really glad this ended up in a thread where you could post pictures on the internet showing the issue, could have been really bad.
@Ed@Demonspeed
can get you the parts you need. If you want to take a whack at the install yourself, we can help make sure you can get it done right. Just reach out if you want any help.
WOW so glad your ok and the car too.. Now.. who did the install locally? i hope you reach out them and let them have it.. Also if you need help installing them I'm right down the road and can help bud..
Whoa. One would hope anybody that has ever worked on a car suspension would get the vibe they're installing it wrong....and stop and ask or refer to instructions.
No real instuctions for these arms but 100s of pics. It pretty intuitive for most. Also i would like to see the shops name in this thread. This goes beyond dumb and they put u and others in danger so they need to be called out.
zbomb - Indeed! Thanks to all the responders. Im pretty freaking torqued. When a shop puts German Performance in their name, Id think they would not so thoroughly eff this up. Im ticked I didnt think to check this, butanyway. I pulled the broken arm and the new shims and ends come in today. Im putting 7mm on each side, or whatever that washer width is, cuz thats the width that put her in spec
. The snapped arm is on my bench. Ill take off the end of the unbroken arm and also shim it to 7mm. Put it all back together and check the alignment. Pretty easy stuff. The only reason I took the arms in to this shop was they were gonna align anyway.
After I put the arm back together, Ill contact the offending shop with the before and after photos and ask them what they propose to do to make this near-catastrophe less repugnant.
Thanks Ed. I happened to purchase them from your shop. And related…your brand 996 Cup lip is wicked durable. It was a nasty sound when that side of the lip came down on the ground post-speed bump. Just some rash and barely anything cosmetic to note.
I’ll contact your guys and see what they can do to refurb those ends.
well let me know if you need help with them as I know the guys over there pretty well.. this sucks and knowing them they will want to know this situation for sure..
Justin76 - Thank you! GPO owner told his guys to reach out Friday afternoon. I was pretty sure theyd be willing to make things right once they got all the info. Theyre pretty unhappy the car left their shop in such a state. Theyre paying for the new parts, checking alignment and well see what else this Monday. I finished installing the new Tarett ends today. Shout out to FCP Euro. They have some on-point tutorials!
So GPO did another alignment and covered the cost of the replacement parts and alignment refund. They were true to their word and made sure I Ieft with a safe car again. The tech was very apologetic about the complete brain fart. I don’t get to hear my car tear off and make noise, so the two test drives that zipped by me and my wife were grin-worthy!
Good shops don't like it at all when stuff like that happens because it effects everyone in there..Three strikes and your out of there, or sometimes just one strike, if you are even lucky enough to BS your way in the door to start with..
I was at one FoMoCo shop for 2 decades, a Mitsu shop for a decade, and been with Porsche for 2 decades ( retired) and have seen many techs canned for lesser infractions, especially if it cost the shop $$$....
Probably too late for this but I would want ALL the studs replaced, even the ones that did not fail.
I'd want them dye penetrant checked for cracks as a minimum.
Oh yes, I also replaced the driver side with new. Im pretty sure Demonspeed can replace the old bolts on the LCA ends so I can keep them in my parts bins for some future use. They only had 6,000 miles on them.
