I disconnected the shift cables from the trans (numeric, with a numeric shifter), to make sure it was not an issue with the cables.

The shifter lever on the trans will not move (at least not enough to change gears).

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

8 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I'll start off by saying that I am 99% sure that I need a new transmission, but figured I would post here in case someone had some ideas. I was at the track this weekend, and everything was going well. I did occasionally have an issue getting the car into third, but that has been happening for a while. I drove in from the last session on Saturday, all was still good. When I went to move the car the next morning, it was tough getting it into any gear. I finally got it into second, but it would not come out. I disconnected the shift cables from the trans (numeric, with a numeric shifter), to make sure it was not an issue with the cables. The shifter lever on the trans will not move (at least not enough to change gears). The clutch appears to still be working since it will roll if I push in the clutch. I have another transmission, so not the end of the world, but I wanted to check to see if anyone had any ideas of something else it could be.

POST 2Original post

Yup it go boom. Most likely gear teeth stuck in places they shouldnt be.

I guess I can't complain. It has a total of 130K miles, with at least 35K track miles.

POST 4Original post

Maybe @hbdunn will share a pic from his recent trans issue....bet yours looks similar. Couple hours to put the other trans in and u r back on track.

POST 5Original post

Does it drive normally with it second? If it does it may be a relatively easy fix. Mine came apart at lime rock this spring but all the rods and forks shifted normally. It was a thrust washer that had broken and allowed the needle bearing of a spinning gear to come apart. So I could shift through the gears, they werent meshing properly causing it to buck. These are pretty easy to take apart and investigate the problem.

It does drive okay in 2nd. Was able to drive it onto the trailer. Since I have the spare trans, I will throw it in, and figure out what to do with this one. Maybe rebuild and throw an LSD in it.

POST 7Original post

It could indeed be a number of things, most likely related to the shift rods and interlock inside the transmission. I wouldn't give up hope, it could be a relatively simple fix, perhaps even something as simple as a tension pin that has popped out of one of the shift forks. I would guess that it's not an issue with engagement teeth or a shift sleeve, but just an educated guess.

I'll crack it open once it is out. For now, will put the used one in that I have, and potentially fix this one later.
