I used my 996 just for pleasure drives, blasting around backroads on the weekends and the occasional commute.

The size was recommended by a few of my SCCA friends that run the same Hoosier slick dimension in front.
Run 225/40 front (25.1 sidewall), the visual looks very balanced

I'm also a bit biased because I've run Michelin tires on my motorcycles for years and absolutely love and trust them in all conditions.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Fixed it to reflect the size I was actually suggesting.
Sorry if this has been discussed, couldn't find any recent posts. My '03 C2 on 18" factory wheels came with Michelin PS2 (N3) when I bought it earlier this year. They are dated from 17 and even though tread is over 50%, they are starting to show some fine cracking on the outside edge.
I was hoping to replace them with Michelin PS4S that i loved on my previous BMWs, but it doesn't look like they are made in 285/30-18 for the rear. Tire Rack shows that these are my only choices in stock size:
- Conti ExtremeContact Sport 02
- no experience with this tire, but i generally hated the OEM all-season continentals that came on new BMW and Audi's I've had as dailies in the past. They were also much more noisy than the equivalent michelins. Anyone recommend them?
-
Michelin PS2
- for $1500!!!!!! I guess these are the OEM replacements...no freaking way in hell I'm paying more for a set of 20 year old design tires than Cup 2s. How does michelin justify them being more expensive than 4S?
-
Michelin Cup 2
- overkill for my needs. I used my 996 just for pleasure drives, blasting around backroads on the weekends and the occasional commute. All I need is a performance tire that is reasonably comfortable and reasonably capable, with great feel.
I guess the Conti's could work and are reasonably priced, but I also don't like them too much as far as looks...Michelin seems to sit nice on the rims and sidewalls stick out to offer good rim protection...I know it's vein but I like that nice square profile. I'm also a bit biased because I've run Michelin tires on my motorcycles for years and absolutely love and trust them in all conditions.
The PS4S is available in the 295 C4S rear size...is it worth considering shoehorning that onto my rims or are the aspect ratios going to mess with handling or look visibly off? Anyone doing this and have photos? Looking for suggestions here. THX!
I'll second the post even though its been discussed before ha. My Sumitomo are dated 2017 as well with plenty of tread too. I've never had an N spec tire, curious if you noticed a difference and if it is worth it. $1500 is quite a bit
Traction and feel is still great but Im sure they are old and weathered. My car sat a lot over the last 2 years in the Arizona sun before I bought it, so the PS2 N3s Im going to guess arent a great representation of how they perform normally. I find them noisy and pretty stiff, compared to the PS4S that Ive had on my last E46 M3. $1500 is a joke. Even for OEM Porsche tax. Thats what Cup2 cost.
OP - I run a 275/35 in the back. 25.6 sidewall vs a 25.9 for the 285/35. Either is a meatier choice than the low sidewall 285/30 or the pinched 265/35 (Why Porsche, why was a 265 ever chosen as OE?) . If you run a 225/40 front (25.1 sidewall), the visual looks very balanced with a 275.
Agreed. They are phenomenal. I have them on 2 of my other cars. One of them had Michelin PSS prior, and the Conti ECS were better in all aspects.
My 996 has the Sumitomos. They seem ok for what they are, and they do look good. Grip is adequate, but with the aggressive alignment, they are quite noisy. I will probably drive them one more season then see what the Michelin and Continental offerings are for replacement.
This is what I did, in order to get PS4S rather than PS2. 2002 narrow body (targa). The slightly bigger tire looks good IMO and works at least as well as the old PS2's.
I went with 295/30 and 245/40 4s. Amazing tires. Unsure how those will be with factory wheel widths though. Old pictures before the coilovers were installed.
I have had the following tires:
Michelin Pilot Super Sports (I think this is now called the PS4S) - Liked these tires a lot!
Continental Extreme Contact - Have these on my E55 and they hook up pretty good. Haven't used them in the rain.
Michelin Cup 2's - Have these on my Turbo - VERY sticky, pretty well wearing as well. Not amazing in the rain...
Possibly. The NT01 is only available in a 245/40 so I was using that with a 315/30 in the back. The conti I have now is 200 vs 100 tw tire. I also like the rake with the smaller diameter in the front.
I only rub at full lock even though my car is fairly low. 18x9 front wheel. The size was recommended by a few of my SCCA friends that run the same Hoosier slick dimension in front.
