Oil analysis is a great tool, imo best used for a harbinger of future costly events, to help take action early on before things get expensive.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I get oil analysis done since I bought the car. When I had it tested 12/21 it came back with high lead and some of the other materials were higher. I haven't driven the car but 1100 miles since then, but I just changed the oil as I will be bringing the car down to Florida as we are moving here. I plan to drive the car, and still plan to do it. I have 3 or 4 samples prior to this from Blackstone, my copper has always been a little higher than others samples here, but still low. Here is the latest, the lead and now tin are high. Remember that this sample only has 1100 miles on it. The good news is: I just bought a MaxJax for my shop in FL, so I just might be using it to drop the engine someday and putting in a Porsche short block. I did see a post from Porschtech about the thrust bearing and checking endplay. Anybody have any thoughts let me know.

POST 2Original post

Aw man, sorry to hear that. How many miles are on the engine? Do you think the lead is bearing wear?

POST 3Original post

Thats a bummer indeed. The upgraded Hartech/Slakker engines seem to be a very good price vs a stock one.

POST 4 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

The engine has 59K miles. I guess this is why you do oil analysis.

POST 5Original post

Sorry to see this as well. It seems odd with only 59k miles. There must have been some event in it's prior life that damaged one or more of them. How will this eventually fail? Is it like bore scoring, where you can get a year or two after it starts ticking before you need to rebuild? Or will it fail catastrophically?

POST 6Original post

Not an expert, but in and of itself I don't know how worrisome that lead level is. Your copper is the same as it was in 2019. If it was bearing wear you'd expect to see both trending up. I know, fewer miles, but you also changed the viscocity and your oxidation value is in line with your prior 5w50 value. And your prior test was almost 2 years ago - was the car only driven 1134 miles since Dec 21? Oil sitting in the pan for a long time? So despite the miles your oil was end-of-life and I don't know that you can compare apples to apples here. Iron is also the same. Lead could be from another source like oil cooler or radiator, or even with that lead value it may be normal wear, showing more due to the viscosity change. You can't do a direct comparison with the drop from 50 to 40 weight, especially if - as it appears - you've been driving with oil that's over 18 months old. Without other symptoms I'd go back up on the viscosity and continue to drive it and trend.

POST 7 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

They made a mistake again, I did not see it was 5w-50 on the previous oil change, it's always been Driven 5W-40. I have had them correct it before. I like the Lake Speed report, but I can't see where it's really different from the Blackstone. I'm just going to keep driving it and keep the trend up.

Sorry this happens to you, but congratulations on the MaxJax,, very nice.... Well, my 2cents ... Oil analysis is a great tool, imo best used for a harbinger of future costly events, to help take action early on before things get expensive. As you might already know, most bearings first layer, a .004"-.006" coating is a tin/lead-based alloy. Copper/lead alloy is the next layer, then next layer is usually a steel base. That being said, idk the exact composition of a oem 996 bearing, or even if you have oem bearings,, the above construction is for my favorite bearing, the Clevite77. I've been using Clevite77's for many many decades even way before Mahle bought them out I used Clevette 77 with great success. And many other big name brand bearings use the same bearing composition. Problem is, with the metals count showing babbit bearing top layer wear, you could be at a point that not much damage has occurred to expensive reusable parts. As no copper yet in the oil reports. This means you're still at the first layer of the bearing construction. meaning a .002" bearing clearance could now have worn off too many thousands out of spec and still show no copper in the reports. When a bearing gets worn beyond specs next step is bearing failure. Cranks cost $6k before balancing. A blown rod bearing can cause total destruction, block and all. @ 7000rpm its grenade time. If the rod/parts gets thrown thru the carrier/block you just lost your core charge refund more than likely, iirr thats like $4k. probably need some extra head work also if a cyl has lets go... What I'm trying to convey is,, every mile you put on now is costly, could cost big time if a repair/rebuild was being considered. perfect time to rebuild a worn engine is before its worn out and busted up... Hows your oil pressure...? @ hot oil idle..? @ 4k rpm hot oil...?. jmo

Yup, not pretty. Fortunately this was not mine, but one we took apart last year. Running fine...then it wasnt. Crank is now a paperweight.

POST 10 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Oil pressure is normal both hot and cold.
