I once pumped the rear diff fluid out of the fill plug on a C3 Corvette rather than pulling the cover to drain it and part of the pump broke off inside the diff.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Good Morning, This past weekend I was replacing the spark plug tubes in my 2000 996 when one of the tubes broke, and piece about 1 inch long and 1/4 inch wide fell into the driverside valve cover/head. I could locate the piece with my bore scope, but it fell deeper into the valve cover upon removal. I can't locate the piece anymore, and I'm worried this will cause issues down the road. I feel the best option is to remove the valve cover, but I wanted to check here to see if anyone has any ideas. Is there another way to access the bottom side of the valve cover without removing the whole cover? What if I remove the oil pump from the front of the head and go in from there? Thank you in advance! SJ

Are they plastic? Then I assume a magnet is out of the question. It could be worth trying one of these: https://amzn.to/3yLFlXO I have one, and I've been absolutely amazed by the number of times I've snagged something blind on the first or second try.

POST 3 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

They're plastic. I actually bought one of these, but the head of the tool is too big. Good idea, though!

My guess is you can get one small enough. I once pumped the rear diff fluid out of the fill plug on a C3 Corvette rather than pulling the cover to drain it and part of the pump broke off inside the diff. I was able to fit one of those tools with a borescope taped to it and pull the broken piece out of the fill plug hole which couldn't have been more than 3/4".

POST 6Original post

I had a similar plastic problem with a different vehicle. Using an old broken flex cable, I dipped the end into a rubbery type of adhesive cement several times, building up the material so that it would not come off the end and be thick and sticky enough to grab onto the plastic broken pieces as they were relatively small, but not shards.

POST 7Original post

Maybe a vacuum cleaner to suck it out? Probably don't want to use the one that your wife uses.

I tried the shop-vac but it pushed the last piece further in the head...

Like a plastic weld?

POST 11Original post

try some Alien Tape - stuff is pretty cool you'll need a camera borescope thing and flexible wire

POST 12 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I poked around for about an hour tonight and haven't been able to locate the piece. I Honesty thought I might have sucked it up with the Shop-vac for a moment. I've circled in red where I believe the missing piece is located. It doesn't appear I can get a bore scope or claw in this location without some sort of surgical equipment... I'm lost and don't know what to do next. The item could stay where it is and never cause an issue or it could get stuck somewhere and cause an issue later on.. any advice or recommendations are much appreciated!

POST 13Original post

If it fell to the bottom of the head there is a good chance it will get washed down to the oil pan. If your brave u can run the engine and see if it makes it wat all the way down or u r removing the valve cover to retreive it.

POST 14Original post

Simply remove the valve cover and retrieve it. It is a doable job with the engine in, but you do need cam hold down tools. A few hours and an oil change. You could have been done by now.

How was the valve cover on and off in the car like? Did you have trouble with the glue getting it back on? I think that would be the challenge.

POST 18 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

It actually wasn't that bad. I ended up taking the header off, which I think is a must. The two bolts that hold on the muffler bracket where the hardest ones to get to. I would try to install them from the top if I had to do this again. I would also loosen the x-pipe brackets and let the exhaust hang down for more clearance. I followed this video closely. He did it outside of the car but the process is still the same: You Tube Hope that helps!
