2000 cabrio 31k miles and manual. Just had new coolant expansion tank done and proper coolant added. Was driving Friday and car always runs at 180 and the needle splitting the 0. Usually just prior to the 0 and to the middle. Well while I was in a drive through for about 14min prob 62 degrees I noticed it has crept to the end of the 0. Started driving and went back to normal and rested between 8 and 0. Is this much fluctuation normal?

Coverage and how to read this overview
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Pesky drive thrus! Yes. My car quickly picks up temperature too when it's not getting fresh air to the radiators. I have noticed it in a drive thru as well.
Fantastic thank you.
Normal. If you really want to know what your actual temps are, connect a Bluetooth-style dongle to the OBDII port and see. Durametric will also work.
No worries. The temp will fluctuate a bit, it just shows that the thermostat is in it's dynamic range. These cars can easily overheat due to neglect of the coolant system. IF your needle passes the next index(unmarked) on the scale you need to start checking what is wrong. Even in full on driving it should not pass the next index.
