I use a top notch shop that does a lot of classic car restorations, they'll even paint little stuff like headlight washer caps.

Anyone else ever run into this with a body/collision shop?

I know I'll get flamed for this, but I normally use Maaco for paint work.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I'd like to get the hood on my 2003 C2 resprayed when the weather gets better here in the NYC area. It's riddled with road rash. I'm also thinking of going with turbo style bumpers, and if I do, I'll have them sprayed as well. Anyway, a few years ago I wanted to have an old BMW 325i I had restored repainted. I checked with a couple of good body shops in my area and none of them really had any interest in doing the job, even though I was paying cash. I don't know if they thought it would interrupt their insurance business or that I was crazy for wanting to pay more for a paint job than the car was worth. I ended up having it done at a place that did painting as well as mechanical work and just about everything else. It came out beautifully, but I wonder if I'll have the same problem again, since I don't need body work-just the paint. Anyone else ever run into this with a body/collision shop?
Yes, I have. So many shops just do insurance collision work, it's tough to find a reasonably priced paint shop for cash. I know I'll get flamed for this, but I normally use Maaco for paint work. I need to have a small crack in my front bumper fixed along with re spraying it. I'm going to start with Maaco, and if they are reasonable, I'll go with them . But my car is a driver- 143k+ miles. It's not a pristine hangar queen.
Find a shop that does custom work. I use a top notch shop that does a lot of classic car restorations, they'll even paint little stuff like headlight washer caps. They did my GT3Tek front spoiler for about $300, it's the best looking paint on the car.
listen im not sayin you can get a great deal on paint work, from experience i can tell you good paint work involves labor and that means more time, prepping the parts or body panels for paint especially bumpers and parts that arent metal,is critical so if the price is to cheap you should be suspicious, every thing looks good when its new and shiny!....good luck.
My car looked horrible and is worth less than $20k so I just knocked out a $2k paint job. There are a few flaws but looks a hundred times better for 1/5th of what the purists would spend. ROI
Do most shops bake the car or anything after painting? I remember the shop who painted my old BMW-and who I'll probably have do my hood-told me to be careful for a few days so that the finish could fully cure. Is that the normal way it's done?
There is a guy my old man went to highschool with in the Bristol, PA area. Has his own shop and does the work himself. DM me and I'll give you his info. He was put on this earth by the man above to paint cars, I'm telling you. He has serious talent.
