Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Leading evidence: 'Replace bunch of stuff' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'issue might be' (1 discussions; 0 report identifying it and 1 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Replace bunch of stuff' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

Suspected cause
I suspect the noise is coming from a slight wobble or vibration in the throw-out bearing that is carried all the way to the clutch pedal, and the clutch pedal has just a tad amount of slack that allows this noise to take place.

Unsuccessful attempt
I tried spraying some silicone lube into the clutch master cylinder rod, it did not solve the issue but seems like the rattle has changed its tone a bit.

Coverage and how to read this overview
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.
6 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

I've been hearing a weird ticking sound that
seems
to rise/fall with revs but only occasionally. It only happens every now and then when in neutral and, most times, if I press the clutch, even just very lightly, it immediately stops and I never hear anything strange when in gear. It's got a fairly new clutch (maybe 5k miles or so).
Strangely, it sounds like it's coming from in front of me (maybe near the pedal?) rather than from the gearbox but I couldn't say with 100% certainty that's the case.
Any ideas? Maybe something going on with the clutch master cylinder? I really don't like
any
ticking sounds. I'd like to see if anyone has experienced similar.
Mine does the exact same thing. I suspect the noise is coming from a slight wobble or vibration in the throw-out bearing that is carried all the way to the clutch pedal, and the clutch pedal has just a tad amount of slack that allows this noise to take place.
I havent looked into it yet, but curious as to if anyone else has addressed it.
Do you hear it if you turn off the car and coast down a hill?
If so it could be the same issue I had. Very faint but managed to drive me nuts.
On my c2 a bearing was worn inside, seems to be a common thing. Cost $2500 at gbox, they opened it and replaced a bunch of stuff. Took them 2 days, highly recommend.
Sorry to revive an old thread.
My recently acquired 02 C4S also has the same issue.
There is a consistant squeak/rattle noise coming near the pedal box area during idle when clutch is not depressed.
The noise goes away as I lightly touch the clutch pedal.
Originally I found the noise occurs intermittently. Later I was able to replicate it during drives.
If I left go of the clutch at a faster pace, the rattle will occur during idle. If I gently release the clutch pedal and it stays quiet.
I tried spraying some silicone lube into the clutch master cylinder rod, it did not solve the issue but seems like the rattle has changed its tone a bit. I suspect the issue might be from the clutch master cylinder. However, I have yet verified it yet.
Any other members have this same issue?
