In addition, if the ignition feels heavy on a cold start, especially in cold weather, I would replace the lock cylinder too.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

5 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

0 evidence records excluded for query context · 0 excluded by outcome qualification · 0 adjusted by outcome qualification.

2 acknowledgements have no verified action link; they do not establish a repair result.

They come as a single unit from Porsche and it fixed a bunch of crazy problems I was having.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

My brothers 2000 996 has been playing up recently, I said I check rennlist for him as i'm over on the Cayenne forum. So he turns the key in the ignition and all dash lights come on as they should, then when he tries to start the engine the starter motor doesn't engage at all, not even a flicker. This can happen five or six times but then suddenly the next time the starter will work. When it does engage it turns the engine over perfectly, not at all slow or laboured. His battery appears to be good and there are no related errors when I checked with my Autel scan tool. Anyone had this problem, I couldn't find anything with a search. Any ideas. cheers Mike

POST 2Original post

Electrical part of the ignition switch. It causes these types of issues. Have it replaced.

Agree with DBJoe996 above. In addition, if the ignition feels heavy on a cold start, especially in cold weather, I would replace the lock cylinder too. They come as a single unit from Porsche and it fixed a bunch of crazy problems I was having.

sounds like my old issue. Is this a manual? If so check the clutch pedal ignition lock switch. Search board for this issue. I fixed the issue with just ziptying the switch but make sure you never start the car on any gear.
