Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

After some driving when I got home, I checked the oil and its showing overfilled.
Leading evidence: 'Check oil and its showing overfilled' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Check level' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

Question - Were you checking the level on a nice flat surface as a slight incline / decline will give you an inaccurate reading ....

had an oil change done prior to me picking up the car.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I picked up my new 99 996 the other day. The P.O. had an oil change done prior to me picking up the car. After some driving when I got home, I checked the oil and its showing overfilled. My question is can I remove the oil filter and dump the oil until its in range, or do I need to do a full oil change? Thanks!
That depends on exactly how much overfilled it is. One of two things happened:
1) They didn't drain the old oil before adding the new. Some cheap/fast shops have been known to do this. That would mean 2x as much oil, it would be WAY up the dipstick, and probably smoking alot. -> Drain all the oil, replace, and be thankful that it isn't hydrolocked from pulling oil through the intake.
2) They just overfilled it a little. It's at full or a half quart over or something. You could drain by removing the filter. If the filter and the oil really do look new, then just do that to get the oil level to a reasonable point.
That said, whichever is the case, even if it's (2), I would start to question who did it, what type of oil they put in, what brand of filter, etc. Did they do it right? For my new cars, I tend to drain and refill most/all of the fluids just so I know for certain when it was done, and that it was done right.
when in doubt. dump it out. all of it.
go to fcpeuro.com and buy their
oil change kit
. when it comes time to replace whatever you buy from them you can return the old filter and oil for a full refund after you receive the new kit. holy **** i just found out about that policy the other day and it blew my mind. how do they make money? why didn't my brother-in-law tell me about this before? bastard.
Question - Were you checking the level on a nice flat surface as a slight incline / decline will give you an inaccurate reading .... Secondly make sure you are on a nice flat surface let the car sit overnight and recheck the following day just to make sure and if still overfilled just drop the oil drain plug for a second to let out a 1/4 to 1/2 L as your oil level should normally be in the half way bar range and not up to the top full bar anyway.
Removing the oil filter if overfilled will not remove enough oil to get you to the half way bar anyway without starting the car again and starting the car to refill the oil filter again will then give you an inaccurate oil reading. No big deal just drop the plug for a second and be prepared to forcefully reinsert as the oil will come out hard and fast ..Then recheck from there , this is an easy 20min job ..
If you have a vacuum sucker to remove the oil from the dipstick, you can just use that to pull it out from the dipstick. That's how I change my oil on my Audi's.
I forgot your year has a dipstick .....You may be able to pull some fluid out thru the dipstick tube with a vac pump as mentioned or otherwise it's either the drain plug or the oil filter depending on how much you need to pull out.
If it's showing just a little above the full mark on the dipstick (the following depends on your definition of "a little") chances are you're less than a half-quart over which, given the oil capacity of these engines is well within any safety factor designed in by Porsche engineers.
