Those are indeed the "pumpkins" - most on the board think the cars look better with clear lenses (and some have replaced the bulbs as well).

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

New to the forum and a new 911 owner (as of late last year). I have a 2003 Targa, do mostly short trips on weekends but try to get the occasional longer (45 min +) drive in to get everything up to temperature and keep the battery topped off. I'm about to go out of town on business for 2 months and my wife is not planning to drive my car at all - she never drives it as a matter of principle, go figure, its her idea. My question, should I be worried about leaving the Targa parked in the driveway for 2 months? Would it help if my wife started it once every 2 weeks and let it idle for 10-15 minutes or does it need to be driven once or twice to get the engine up to temperature and top off the battery? Any advice is appreciated, but I leave on Saturday. She'll be sitting under her car cover in my outside driveway, sadly I have no garage... Any tire or wheel issues sitting for two months? Thanks and hope everyone has a Happy and Healthy Thanksgiving. -Lawrence

POST 2Original post

Does it have to stay in the driveway? Noting major to worry about, except to keep the battery on a tender, so if you can't park the Targa inside and use a tender, pull the battery inside and put it on a tender make sure your air pressures are up; I'd say a couple pounds over since it will be cold-ish, where ever you are Welcome & Happy Thanksgiving! Post Pics, before the newb police start ranting....

POST 3Original post

If you pull the battery, see if you have the radio security codes.

POST 4Original post

mail me the keys and PM me your address.... I will keep the battery charged up

POST 5Original post

The tires will be fully flat spotted unless you pump in at least 5-10 lbs more in them. (They still will be affected from sitting). The battery can't deal with that. Put a trickle charger on it, as a minimum. When you get back, put a full battery charger on it and give it at least 10 amps for an hour. That's quite sad that a relatively new P-car is relegated to staying outside all the time.

POST 6Original post

wanna buy a cover cheap (one of those - "things I bought")

POST 7Original post

Welcome to the forum...your battery as mentioned is probably the biggest concern. Trickle charging is easy and cheap. Pics will help...

POST 8Original post

I'm the expert on this one. If you are going to leave the car for 2 months, I suggest: 1. Fill the tank and add Stabil to it in the proper proportion 2. Find a garage - why in the world would you leave your car in the driveway for 2 months? Rent storage if you have to. 3. It's better to leave it on a trickle charger/battery maintainer than to either start it or drive it short distances while you're away. Car needs to get up to operating temperature to prevent condensation from forming and causing problems. 4. Post pics or Tim (gota911) will utterly destroy you. I know this all too well. 5. Have a very happy Thanksgiving and don't forget to plunk down the meager $17 to join Rennlist. Money very well spent.

POST 9Original post

+1 on the $17 and pics. Cars seem to get more RL love when good pics are posted

POST 10Original post

On more thing: Tape up your tailpipes with something to keep moisture from creeping up it (if in a high humidity area). Ditto for the intake end.

POST 11Original post

When I read this thread title, I thought "When did Phil buy a Targa?

POST 12Original post

Would it make more sense to disconnect the battery? (given that it will be outside)

POST 13Original post

Have your wife start it once a week, let it run a few minutes to circulate the coolant, charge the battery and give all the internals of the motor and trans, and belt driven devices a fresh film of oil. If possible have her drive it around the block, if not back it up an pull it forward to operate the brakes, transmission and give the wheel bearings a fresh coat of grease. Most all the damage, mechanically, that your car will sustain during its life will come from sitting idle. Moisture from condensation, drying out of seals and such, and having grease and oil slowly run off of parts that are continually lubricated, welcoming corrosion are the biggest factors in detioration of machinery. You wouldn't think of disassembling your motor and leaving it open to the elements for a couple of months. But if stored, at least 3 or more cylinders are open to the outside air thru the intake and exhaust. Put an open glass jar on its side outside for a few days and look at it at different times of the day. See water droplets form? It's just like the inside of your motor and trans. When your car is running, virtually no wear takes place, and it would most likely run 500,000 miles or even double that without incident. I'm in the motorcycle business and can verify the horrors I see very often from low mileage machinery that sits without being run often. Even on my own roadracing motorcycle, the piston rings became rusty and pitted and left pitted impressions in the cylinder from being stored in garage for 2 months in the off season without being started.

POST 15Original post

Phil's former car is going into winter storage next week. It will be stored in an unheated garage all winter without air circulation, because the house is to be unoccupied for that period of time. I was told to put down a layer of plastic over the concrete and better yet, a patch of outdoor rubber backed carpeting over the plastic. Does this make sense? What about getting a small fan and just letting it run or should I go there once in a while to open and close the door? I could easily take it out on a weekend for a drive if the weather and roads are clear but salt residue from prior storms is likely. I don’t want to be hand washing a car in sub 40 degree weather. What to do?

POST 16Original post

Good morning Hugh - I'd give you similar advice as in my post above. 1. Fill the tank and add Stabil to it in the proper proportion 2. It's better to leave it on a trickle charger/battery maintainer than to either rt it or drive it short distances while you're away. Car needs to get up to operating temperature to prevent condensation from forming and causing problems. 3. Watch for mice - they seem to love stored Porsches. 4. Use the cover while stored. 5. Put a extra several pounds of air into each tire to avoid flat spots. 6. Don't clean the garage - last time you did that, you fractured your ankle. I don't think a ventilation fan matters much. It would be great if you could put a heater in the garage to keep it at least 50 degrees. Stay well and get that ankle totally healed up! Phil

POST 17 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks for all the advice, I appreciate it. I'm heading out to put an extra 5-8 psi in the tires today and give it a final drive. I should have mentioned that I have a good 4-ply cover that I use 90% of the time when she sits so that will be in place. And my wife has agreed to start and drive her for 10-20 minutes at least every 2 weeks while I'm gone. Will probably have to wait until I'm back home but joining Rennlist sounds like a good use of $17. Comments on my lack of a garage are funny but appropriate. After living in Seattle and San Francisco with a 2 car garage in each of my houses, how did I end up near Washington, DC with no garage and off street parking for one car?? Go figure. At least I love my job now and finally have a 911! Thanks again folks. LB

POST 18 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Paid up for two years, feels good! A better picture will have to wait until after my business trip. Another newbie question - is the yellow side light the thing referred to as a "pumpkin," and would it look better replaced with a clear or white lens? LB

POST 19Original post

Quotes source post: 7103830

Those are indeed the "pumpkins" - most on the board think the cars look better with clear lenses (and some have replaced the bulbs as well). You can buy a set of new lenses that snap in (easy DIY install) with amber lenses for around $50. I got mine from Porsche of the Main Line, but here's a link from Suncoast Motors where you can order them. They can be ordered in smoked or clear lenses. Either, IMO is better than the orange ones. http://www.e-partssales.com/miva//me...ry_Code=lights

POST 20 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Phil - Thanks for the link, the clear side markers will be a quick upgrade next month. Lawrence
