Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

I hadn't looked closely because you can't fill your own tank in NJ.

Source reports, not a diagnosis or a success probability. Counts refer to discussions and can overlap.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Mine has no hook or other way to retain the cap while adding fuel - the cap just dangles by the passenger-side tire.
It sure looks like there should be a clip on the back side of the fuel door, but ours are both missing if that's the case.
Is it a 99? The 99s did not have a hook on the door. Actually they did not have the lanyard on the cap either. Somewhere I found that you just pull the lanyard collar off of the gas cap when you buy a new one. When I had a 99 I just plunked the cap on top of the gas pump. At least it didn't dangle against the paint that way.
It is a '99. I went ahead and bought a new cap with lanyard so it could hang down in the wheel well. I didn't realize that '99s didn't have the hook. Answers my question, though. Thanks.
Can someone post a picture of what the hook looks like? Is it possible to retrofit the hook from newer cars to the earlier ones? My 2000 doesn't have one either and I live in NJ where the gas is (mandatorily) pumped for you. Most of the gas attendants do try to find a place to put the cap, but then they give up because there is no good place to put it. I'd like to retrofit one if it is available (or make one if not).
Looks like the valve stem supports on the old Fuchs rims. They were held on with double sided tape. Bet one would work well there. When I get home I will look for some old ones and see if it would work. I'll take a pic if it looks possible.
I've got a '99 too. I rest my cap just to the left of the filler tube while fueling. It fits perfect there and makes it hard to forget to put the cap back on when you're done...
** Looking at that first photo, there's a slot to the left of the latch (just like the one that the latch slides into). It looks like if you're handy you could fabricate something to fit in there so you could hang your cap on it...
That slot is what initially had me scratching my head. I thought for sure I was missing something there. Some German engineer is probably laughing at me, drinking his giant stein of beer.

Pelican sells them. You can get a new one for $9 with some strong double sided tape already installed. It would be very easy to file/trim it to size. They are thin aluminum.

Lol, just another thing for RL to obsess over.
Been meaning to see if this mod would work on our caps. I find it much better solution than the lanyard IMO.

Thanks for posting the photo. It turns out my 2000
does
have the same hook in body color. I hadn't looked closely because you can't fill your own tank in NJ. The gas attendants do look for somewhere to hang the cap, but they can't see it either and finally give up and usually let the cap dangle.
