However prior to 99 the air cooled engines all used similar software and tuning and those engines responded well to DME tuning.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Anyone installed a IDP plenum for a 99 cable throttle car? I have a modified exhaust without cats, and was hoping to gain a little torque below 4000 rpm. Is this plenum the answer?

POST 2Original post

No. Whatever claims IDP (or anyone else selling plenums or "cold air" intakes) makes on HP gain or torque gain is bogus. Don't drink the koolaid.

POST 4Original post

You know that Jake Raby has mentioned positive benefits of the IPD plenum on increased bore engine builds.

POST 5Original post

Quotes source post: 17061732

Not on a 99 cable throttle car. Trust me, I asked him.

POST 6 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

With my experience on multiple other Porsches, if you don't install a free-flowing exhaust with the increased volume plenum, it will not increase HP or torque. No point trying to force more air in if it is bottle-necked trying to get out. Hoping to hear from someone who has done both on a '99

POST 7Original post

Quotes source post: 17066427

For what it's worth, I wanted to do this with my FSI build and Jake said it is a waste on cable throttle Carreras.

POST 8Original post

I don't understand why the effects would be different on a cable throttle car. The concept is laminar flow. Improve laminar flow and you get improved volume (provided the exhaust doesn't block it up). The only way I can see it being different in a cable car is if some later piece of the intake system confounds any improvement in flow through the plenum.

I don't believe there is a bigger throttle body available for cable throttle cars. The GT3 throttle is e-gas and cannot be used. Without increasing the throttle body bore size I doubt the plenum does anything.

POST 10Original post

S-car-go made the largest throttle body for cable cars. Not near the size of a gt3.

POST 11Original post

Unless you need to move a lot more air the larger TB will act just like you giving it more throttle and let in the air quicker due to the larger exposed area at the same throttle position, giving you the feeling that it is more peppy than it was before.

POST 12Original post

With the 99 throttle cable cars (only the C2) we’ve learned that the gains are negligible, since we cannot tune the early DME to allow for the benefits to make a difference. We keep stock throttle bodies on these engines as well, and still make huge power gains over stock, without any of the issues that we’ve experienced with going larger on these cars, and spending the big money to do that. What makes sense on a ‘99 C2 is our individual runner throttle bodies, but I only offer those on R Series engines above 4.0L

POST 13Original post

Quotes source post: 17073390

What makes the 99 DME so hard to tune compared to the others? Usually after this much time most computers seemed to be cracked. Not like it seems to make much of a difference but genuinely curious as to what makes the DME more difficult than the later ones.

POST 14Original post

99' C2 needs a chip soldered in, you cant just upload a MAP. As far as increasing any sort of power... The iPD plenum didn't really to anything exciting. The Underdrive pulley probably made the biggest difference for me. Also the RSS motor mounts made the car feel way more connected, I'd do those...

POST 15Original post

Any thoughts on installing 200 cell cats, crossovers or x type? Any power gain?

POST 16Original post

Quotes source post: 17195134

cats and fabspeed maxflows have a nice sound. Not a huge gain but feels a little smoother. X-pipe was not good for me, softronics (ecu tuner for the 99) said they are not a good idea. I kept getting check engine lights with the x pipe. Semi expensive try and fail. 200cell cats seem to work perfectly.

There was a Computer Guru named Floyd Wilk who had a program called "DmeEditor" that had over 100 tune-able maps for the 996 99 C2 DME 5.2.2...He was well known in the 944 circle for Tunes. Lived in CA. I ordered the DmeEditor from the website (was $299) and was to receive the download code, never got a response, tried to e-mail him/ find him . He worked for ATT in the IT department and hasn't been heard from. He must have gotten sick and died. I got my money back from PayPal, The website finally stoppped working all together then fell off the Net.. No one has heard from Floyd in years, big lose !! The 99 C2 CAN be programmed with software, (no chip needed), I have a Program I got from a computer enthusiast that can Edit the 5.2.2 , but only has a few maps identified. I only use it to modify non-important values, like fan control temps ect, due to not having ALL the maps fully identified.

POST 18Original post

Quotes source post: 17195264

Morbid curiosity, looks like there was a Floyd Wilk that passed away in CA in 2016. Figured someone else would have cracked the computer by now, I guess there just isn't a big market for it.

POST 19Original post

Quotes source post: 17195663

What a big lose !! When I found the DmeEditor it took a lot of searching, it was not widely known or advertised anywhere, I found it by chance but the website was fantastic, it had a Demo model you could play with and live 3D Graphs and all kinds of stuff. When I could not get a response from him on e-mail over months, I also checked the Obituary's and he wasn't listed , but he had a reputation for dissapearing for years at a time, then showing back up, he must have been in bad health at the time because I think it was WAY before 2016. Yea not near as much demand or as many Guru's in the Porsche Computers, and in the Grand Scheme of things, Porsche is still a Mom and Pop small operation

POST 20Original post

Quotes source post: 17196303

Big loss indeed. I've spoken to Scott at Softronic about tunes for a 99 C2 - he does tune them, but you have to send your ECU to him for the flash. I wonder if he's using DmeEditor? It was a while ago, and I did not pull the trigger, but has anyone had experience with a Softronic tune on a 99 C2?

POST 21Original post

Quotes source post: 17198348

Floyd was such a Guru he probably identified all 100+ maps in the 5.2.2 DME in one evening at the dinner table and said "Well, if I can get $300 a pop for people to get the download code for this program, that would be pretty good"..lol I would love to get my hands on one of the DmeEditor programs, I was just a month or two too late. It wouldn't surprise me if a few of the people who specialize in Porsche tunes are using Floyds program..

POST 22Original post

Quotes source post: 17194724

Not sure about this one, I had my 99 remote tuned. I definitely felt a difference (more throttle mapping than big power). I am not an expert in this area, Frank at Tuning Tech did the work.

POST 23Original post

My current race engine from FSI has a cable throttle, it has a IPD and a bored out TB. Also running variocam plus on the 5.5.2, but that's another story.

POST 24Original post

Quotes source post: 17199245

Interesting! Any possibility of getting the full story on this^^^? Is it a Stage III engine (you mentioned "race engine"). Clearly the 4.0 liter displacement has the ability to use quite a bit more fuel/air - I'm interested in how Motronic 5.5.2 is handling the management or more specifically how programmable it is. Do you have multiple maps available with Flat 6's hand held programmer?

POST 25Original post

Yes its a 4.0. Jake has a guy that can tune the 5.2.2 but its fixed, the handheld doesn't work on it.

POST 27Original post

I am interested in this topic as well. I totally don’t understand the “limits” of the 99 DME. That being said I have heard it from 3 tuners now, so there must be a valid reason for it. However prior to 99 the air cooled engines all used similar software and tuning and those engines responded well to DME tuning. So then the question becomes what changed in 99? Can a stand alone plug and play ECU be developed from one of the off the shelf stand alones? Recently I have been looking at the VF engineering supercharger kit since that seems to be the cheapest way to get decent power from a 99 without a 40K rebuild. There are a lot of 99s still on the road and the hot-rod market for these cars is just getting going. I would think there would be more options available.

POST 28Original post

New developments in general for the 996 are near over. The 99 was pretty much maxed out with limited room for bolt-on improvements. VF does offer tuning for the SC on a 99. If I were to invest money to make big power then it would be for reliable power that could handle constant loads at a track. Not for occasional demonstrations.

POST 29Original post

Quotes source post: 17216503

Not sure what those Tuners are referring to as "limited". The 993 uses DME 5.2 which is architecturally very similar to the DME 5.2.2 used in the '99 996 also in the '97 '98 '99 986, with different software of course. The" limit" is having an .xdf file for the software with all the maps identified. The DmeEditor program I mentioned in above posts had all the maps identified for 993 986 and 996 DME 5.2 and DME 5.2.2.. FVD does have a handheld programmer that can interface with DME 5.2.2, and can send Tunes via E-mail to adjust parameters for a specific car. The '99 C4 had DME 7.2 as did 2000 and 2001, the DME 7.8 was used in 996.2 '02 '03 '04. Of course you can use stand alone ECU's if you have the programming know-how. Porsche crank trigger and cam trigger and various sensors are different from popular examples and require deep knowledge to create a functioning program, then comes the Tuning knowledge necessary Few people have the ability to do it all on a Porsche model, or have the interest/patience needed to exert the effort.....

This is a source reference. Confirm exact model applicability in the original material.
