During the very last day of my employment, I managed to fill a large clear plastic hose with used motor oil, capped both ends, drove to my assigned parking space, and as I closed the passenger door on my car, placed the hose under his driver's door and removed both caps which deposited a healthy dose of used motor oil on the ground.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I have an assigned spot in a parking structure in my city. The spot next to me appears to be vacant but the other day there was a biga$$ Audi parked in it less than a foot away from my 951. I mean, the guy hadn't even made the effort to park squarely inside the parking space and was crossing over into mine slightly. I keep a Technalon cover on my car, which is kind of thick, so even though I'm sure he touched my car with the door to get out, there was no "paint to paint contact." However, I hate to admit that I was bothered by the situation. I probably need a 12-step program to recovering from "Parking Paranoia."

POST 2Original post

Make a note of his plate. If I ever saw someone park like that next to mine: "If you're gonna park that close, I hope you can afford a brand new porsche door! because it ain't getting "touched up!"

POST 3Original post

I always carry my video-camera in the car to document anything like this that may occur. I make sure to get a snapshot of their license-plate before I go shopping. If only I can hide the camera outside somewhere to continously film the Porsche...

POST 4Original post

I park all my cars as far away from others as possible all the time. In the Midwest, we learn to fear dents/scratches/rust young.

I've had the same fantasy about the video camera

POST 6Original post

You can ask to have your spot changed to a better one. When I moved into my building here in the city, I surveyed both parking lots 2 story underground, and I got the best spot after some hell raising. My spot it separated by a 3 foot diam. pole and the other side is nothing! It makes it great to detail it as I have florescents overhead right there also! A must. But I lived at one other place and I had two spots, even at that though I got a fat ding one day and raised hell, Threatened small claims court, but ultimately nothing availed as I didn't wish to pursue it any further. I too had pictures of the park job and the dent, etc. Good idea, better than nothing, and it does show they were likely to have caused it and establishes their pressence. In regard to parking anywhere else, I park in the boonies! my car doesn't have a single ding and I want to keep it that way. The only mar on my car is the front hood from rock chips in the canyons

POST 7Original post

There are two kinds of owners when it comes to door dings: 1) Those who believe that strangers will be as careful with your paint as you are. (These people also believe that strangers will be MORE careful around expensive cars than they will around junk). 2) Those that know that the people in the first group are dreaming. Think "defensive parking".

POST 8Original post

Yes, I am a parking paranoid! Luckily at my office parking lot, the spots on either side of me are employees. I always park defensively and always check for door dings upon arriving at my car. My last car (BMW 740) had only one small door ding in two years. I'm trying to better that with my P-car.

POST 9Original post

Hey. Great idea. I already have a camera mount on my harness bar. I've only used by camcorder to document my track runs. You can park the car either facing in or out of a space and then point the camera facing the unprotected direction. It will document the color and make of any car as well as the identity of the driver. If your car is jostled by an interloper you've got it all on tape. If you tint the windows real dark you reduce the chances of anyone being able to see the electronic equipment, thereby reducing the chances of BMW (break my window). I'm sure the local constabulary will be happy to put out an all points bulletin to catch the culprit. Now if we could just stop the commie plot to rob us of our precious bodily fluids through flouridation of the water supply. POE OPE. POST 10Original post

My Turbo has now done 56,000 km and has been through much of Europe and as far as Istanbul. It has been parked outside numerous times in many of these crowded cities. It is often parallel parked. I am always as careful as I can be but only within the limits of still actually using the car. Yet, the car has received not one door ding or even one little scratch from others touching it when parallel parking. I cannot explain it though maybe it is a sixth sense for where to park, who to park next to, etc.? Maybe it is just a habit of minimising the risk as much as I can? Maybe it is also that people in Europe have a little more respect for this type of car? Stephen

POST 12Original post

I spend more time looking for a suitable parking spot than the total amount of time I leave the car parked in that spot. I take the daily driver to the shopping malls, supermarkets, etc.... but there are times when I have to park the pcar in a lot somewhere. I always look for the corner spot or a spot away from others. However, never be the lone car... I have seen those cars get targeted by slack jawed yokels that will go out of their way to mess with your car.

POST 13Original post

I have friend who reparks his car (2-3 times a day) just to get the perfect spot. I'm not that **** but if there is a great parking spot I take the opportunity to take it. Regards. Mike

On the other hand, I had a loaner from Porsche last month. As I was waiting in a long line of traffic, this ... gentleman comes screaming up in his chariot, oblivious to the fact that all of the traffic was stopped ahead of him. He slams on his brakes but no way he can stop in time. So I drop the clutch and manage to just pull into the median in time. Nonetheless, he still managed to catch the corner of the bumper cover. Initially he figured that since it was just the bumper I should forget about it. A photo to remember him by: Anyway, yes, it is all a matter of luck. POST 16Original post

When I got my first 996 a C2 I got a few dings in the first few months. I had them removed and I got a set of bull nose rubber strips w/magnets custom made. If I HAVE to park in a public place I slip them on and have never get a door ding 3 years and 3 996's later none have a mark on them. I'll try to find the company info and post a pics to show you

POST 17Original post

"Doesn't it seem like all the end parking spots are filled with Escorts, Camry's or Honda's? Or worse yet, a total beater!" Not only that but why does it always seem like they don't take advantage of it?? (i.e., instead of hugging the outside park of the space, they park in the middle (at best) or close to the other parking spot.

I can top all of your stories. My now EX-Wife (final two days ago) put 3 door dings in my '01 c2 coupe.YES thats right, THREE ! This wasn't by her driving it to the mall and carelessly parking it. NO, this was done in MY OWN GARAGE! -By her in her 1999 M-3; parking too close, not unloading passengers outside the garage as I pleaded with her to do, etc.. I explained to her the seriousness of her actions but they went unheeded.-Small picture into the nature of our relationship. And now I'm free! -Blustem

POST 24Original post

I'm not that concerned. If I can get a parking spot away from folks I try to get it. If there isn't anything else available I park and go about my business. It's a car that I drive and enjoy. I'll do my best to take care of it, but it won't be the first or last scratch on it. I was the same way with my 1972 MB 280SE.

POST 25Original post

At the company that I worked at before retiring, we were assigned parking numbers. During the last few years, I have had to have a certain individual move his MG more often than not so that I would be able to open my driver's door to back out. It seems like nothing that I requested for years or said had any effect on his parking habits.....nothing! However, a few weeks before retiring, I had enough of years worth of parking abuse and began to place an assortment of shiny new cad plated washers, nuts, or bolts under the idiot's rather scruffy MG every other day for several weeks. Sometimes, I would go by his office and witness this person holding one or several of those newly cad plated parts scratching his head while looking carefully at a Haynes repair manual. Yes, I was able to have several of the dings deposited by this idiot removed by paintless dent removal and was also able to polish out those scratches embedded, however, on the very last day, I was able to open the door to my car and back out while I watched his car being towed away to his local repair shop while he stood looking down at the puddle of oil.......priceless!
