Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

33 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

0 evidence records excluded for query context · 0 excluded by outcome qualification · 0 adjusted by outcome qualification.

0 acknowledgements have no verified action link; they do not establish a repair result.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

So on my drive to Santa Monica today I decided for the ~14 miles of traffic west board on the 10 freeway, I would count all the 911's I past and group them into 996 and 997(+). Here were the findings of my study: Total of five (5) 911s were seen (actually surprised not more, and I only saw one Ferrari). Count: 996: 3 997(+): 2 None of the 996s were seemingly suffering from a CEF. One of the 997+'s was on the shoulder, so I deduce it was because of a CEF. Analysis Results: There are more more 996s then 997(+)s. 996s are obviously a more popular choice. 996s do not suffer from engine malfunctions. Half of the 997(+)s were having mechanical problems, hence 997s are more unreliable. I feel better about being in the market for a 996 now.

POST 2Original post

99 996's are a bargain - I think they have hit bottom price wise -

POST 3Original post

So, Porsche 911 suffers a 20% failure rate with M96/M97 engine? Great job OP, are you CA KrazyK?

POST 4Original post

Your sample size is too small. What is your variance and standard deviation? (I just dropped statistics. Better luck next semester.)

POST 5 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source posts: 12133566, 12133618

No. 911s with an M96 engine suffer a 0% failure rate, with M97s suffer a 50% rate of failure. I am a bizarro-KrazyK. Data was spread across a 14mile route. The deviation was 1, 996 and 997(+) (omgosh statistics was long ago)

POST 6Original post

^^ Hey neighbor. Welcome Good luck finding the right 996, hopefully soon.

POST 7Original post

Your sample has no specifics has the IMS been changed on the 911's? Did you use p test? T test and why? Sent from my iPhone using Rennlist

POST 8Original post

Were they 996.1s or .2s? What about the 997s. Any turbos in the mi (if so must be eliminated from sample due to different engine). What is the confidence interval? Perhaps you could sit at an intersection and use Poisson to model 996 arrivals

POST 9Original post

I was in California this past week and only saw 2 Boxsters between Corona and San Diego on I-15. I thought 1/2 of the Porsches sold in the US were in California. John '03 Targa

I was wondering the same. I've never heard anyone here use the term "CEF" except KK...

POST 11 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source post: 12134229

Ah, I see. Funny, I only learned what CEF (and MOF) was after coming to this site and reading the epically long Cody post. I thought that was the proper term. In KK's defense, many people seem to use that term I really only used it as a joke anyway. I shall refrain.

POST 12 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source post: 12133865

Well the confidence level is 100% obviously. I did say this was a highly scientific analysis in the title, right? On my 28 mile drive back I saw 3 997(+)s, a 993(-), a Lambo, and a Boxster being loaded onto a flatbed on the side of the road. Sad, two in one day. So the 997(+)s have taken the lead in market coverage, however, I'm happy to say the 996 is by far the more reliable car as none of them were on the side of the road. The Boxster is stricken from the study as I wasn't able to tell what year it was.

Excellent. Even better is that we can peer review your paper when you publish!

POST 14Original post

Color analysis? My understanding is the rarer the color, the lower the chance of catastrophic engine failure because Porsche made sure they got 'special' engines. PTM colors in particular. Unless they were tip's, in which case Porsche figured the buyers were tools anyway.

Statistically speaking...100% of all 911's will fail. At some point.

POST 18Original post

Quotes source post: 12135276

But 73.6% of all statistics are made up, so will some 911's last forever?

POST 19Original post

A very good technical analysis IMHO. Prolly a good Ph.D. thesis in that data.

POST 20Original post

Am currently in LA for a quick trip. Have been here about 4 hours and have only seen 997s and Boxen. I conclude that all 996s must have died.

I'm thinking of assembling all the data and assembling it into a coffee table book. Only $119.99. That includes a t-shirt that says, "I bought a 996 and all I got was headlight envy."
