Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

And this has been true the last two times I checked the filter.

I just changed the oil on my S8 a few minutes ago and nothing in the filter at 60K miles.

No metal in the filter oil or filter itself which I tested using a magnet.

Coverage and how to read this overview
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I've recently checked out my oil filter a few times - the cut open and inspect method. Blame IMS bearing paranoia.
I find 10 or so small black flexible fragments that curl up when touched. Plastic, rubber not sure. No metal.
Ideas?
2001 C2 Tiptronic. 59,000 miles.
Well if they were in your biscuits I'd say weevils.
In the filter sounds like bits of the gasket maker/sealant that Porsche uses on many of the sealed surfaces. Have you had the oil pan, valve covers etc.. off recently?
Third time in less than 1500 miles. always a small collection of little, soft, thin, curly black bits - actually like sealant I guess. No metal in the filter oil or filter itself which I tested using a magnet.
BUT in the bottom of the filter canister in the oil dregs a small collection of tiny shiny granules - ten or so. Very small, magnetic.
And this has been true the last two times I checked the filter.
I'm planning to do a re-check in 500 miles. I can't see enough debris to justify working on the engine yet. I dropped the pan and there were no signs of issues in the pan - no debris.
You need a microscope. One that takes pictures.
That is all
P.S. I just changed the oil on my S8 a few minutes ago and nothing in the filter at 60K miles. Need a more powerful microscope!
I changed my oil yesterday. I saved the filter, its a spin on and will buy a cutter as soon as possible and look in it. The magnetic drain plug had nothing on it. The car took 9.8 quarts of oil, I thought they took a little less than that but thats what mine took.
I'm in the process of taking my engine out because of a knocking... But I just opened up my oil filter element, and found these black/brown bits. They are hard... and I think they are from the chain ramps.
There were also some green rubber bits (o-ring?) in there, too.
